Take care rhiwfield.
This crock manage to make a mess of her knee, so going home to weed sitting!
Expect the circubit plants will be pretty cooked; we have had sun all day.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
ooooo poo Rhiwie... take it easy, maybe sitting in the garden with a nice drink:D
When we bought our 'ranch' it said it had 1.8 acres, with a 1/4 of that around the house, BUT we think, and so do everyone who has been there, there is a lot more land than that..
Its a long strip of land, which has been left to go, so there is trees, and well a wilderness of over-growth.. plus old dilapidated remains of an old battery hen sheds.
As for being self sufficient in things.. we could supply ourselves with enough wood for a few years, if we were careful/frugal with it.. we would get this from naturally cutting back old trees, and generally trying to clear up the land... then we would have to look at planting possibly quick-ish growing trees to keep a possible future wood/fuel supplies.
As for food???? 'IF' we had the garden around the house at the ranch sorted etc, with a small polytunnel, AND the time, we could grow a vast amount of fresh food.
eggs from our chickens, also meat from our chickens and pigs, but these need feeding, that we would have to buy in.Work to live= not live to work0 -
morning all:j:j
glorious day here again:T, sad thing about it I am in work:o:o
Been looking at proper scaffolding, not the towers you can buy, buy all accounts, builders and tradesmen, don't like working on them..a friend of ours use to work as a scaffolder for years, so going to try and contact him, to have a look at the secondhand ones on the bay, to see if they are suitable, and the right amount etc..
We are also having props with one or two of the neighbours on the lane, dumping their garden waste on our land:mad::mad:, so some home made signs are being made today.. to 'politely' tell them to stop.. if they don't the next signs, will be rather colourfull to say the least:cool::D:A
Hope Choille is ok....
Right better toddle off to workWork to live= not live to work0 -
Oh, the post I thought I'd made here last night isn't here. Must have made a mistake; I was dog-tired.
Anyway it said: "Take it easy rhiwie and RAS....Plenty of summer left!" or something like that.
Can't remember any more....:rotfl:
Just a thought CTC. Garden waste is useful if that's all it is. Could you make an enclosure out of pallets or something where they could empty it, helpfully?
When you have land, there is always both envy and pressure from others. We have had it here in various ways, like the shooting request last week, a request to park a ruddy great motor home in the yard, a request for a bit of garden and so on. I expect they'd be highly offended if I asked to come and watch telly in their lounge, because they've got Sky....:rotfl:0 -
Take care broken ones.
Re self sufficiency. Our aim was self sufficient ish, We are further from that this year than we have been before really, even living in flats I had as many pots of veg I am certain.
First roses finally out. At long last.
And it's so lovely to be warm! I feel like dancing with joy!0 -

If you're in an area like this they are even known to just let themselves in a sit on your garden benches.
In Clovelly people regularly just walk into houses  There's Right to Roam & there's right to roamlostinrates wrote: »And it's so lovely to be warm! I feel like dancing with joy!
Absolutely!
The rib feels much better so I've been starting to do a little more again. Unfortunately, the more has had to be the sort of jobs that should have been done but couldn't be like cleaning the fridge thoroughly & weeding.
DH is fine with things like mowing, strimming, planting etc. but has always had an allergy to anything like hand-weeding.
We've got tons of Hairy Bittercress around. _pale_ At least I think it's Hairy Bittercress.
Not being able to keep on top of pulling it has let it take hold. Luckily it isn't in the grass nor on most of the land but it's a ruddy nightmare around the house & drive.
Although fairly easy to pull from the cobbles & gravel it's almost impossible to ensure you've got all of it up so it's soon back again - even where hubby sprays. With something like a 3 week cycle I shall be spending months at this & probably still not conquer it
Anyone got any ideas? IN pure desperation I'm thinking of throwing all the windows open wide & playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHOqJYk5-zg but it might worry the neighbours0 -
Hairy bittercress is "Weed of the Year" here too. Maybe it was the wet last year or something?
I thought we'd brought it with us from the last place, but then something so small wouldn't have had much of a chance here earlier. However, having cleared the far side of the bottom field hedge in the winter, I was surprised to see plenty of it springing up there, so we clearly didn't import it after all. :A
I'm adopting a zero-tolerance strategy this year and praying that we see the rewards in years to come.
As we clear new areas, the green manure mustard that got out of control here some years back bursts forth. At least it's bright yellow, so no excuse for missing any!0 -
I think it will be a case of spraying the drive & gravel every fortnight for a while. What do you think?
I've never known whether weedkiller actually kills seeds pre-germination or not.
The trouble is that it's so easy to think you've pulled it all & then looked at from another angle you see all the little blighters you've missed. :rotfl: It's not like the weeds with larger leaves that stand out. These are all delicate little things.
Oh BTW, there's a poster elsewhere asking about small holdings. It seems that it's more a sort of nursery/plant thing he (presumably given the name) has in mind as opposed to a small holding including livestock.
I directed him over here but he may be too shyI didn't really want to say go track down Davesnave. :rotfl:

.
Some will inhibit germination for a few months, but they're not cheap:

What is nowadays?
Don't know if you saw my edit to last post?0
