When I was at a fast fit place last week there was a poster on the wall warning about the perils of part worn tyres and that insurance companies wouldn't cover a car with part worn tyres.

Never seen anything so ridiculous. Does that mean you aren't insured after you've driven your car for 500 miles and the tyres are no longer new?
I suspect what they are referring to is that if you had an accident, and the investigation somehow proved you'd chosen to have part-worn tyres fitted in lieu of new, and they had contributed to the accident, then the insurer might refuse to pay your claim.

How they would prove that I have no idea. Equally, I bet the poster didn't say that :)

How will they ever prove that it was a part worn tyre?

What if the tyres that were already on the car when you bought it were part worn?

Surely it would be impossible for them to ever prove it. They might be able to tell if the tyre had just been fitted if you had a crash driving off the garage forecourt, but what about in a years time if you still have the tyre.

    £285 for tax

    Not very bangernomics friendly.

My Megane is £180 and due April. What you pay more in tax, you save even more in depreciation and/or finance costs.

Exactly, as I said. I have no idea how they'd prove it.

If they were suspicious, however, they may ask you to prove it *wasn't* bought as a part-worn tyre. Who knows?
  • I'm sure part worn tyres need to be stamped part worn. I'm sure council trading standards check these back street tyre "specialists" to make sure they are following the the rules.
just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you

  • While I'm on this thread I may as well join in with my new banger

Bought a 1999 Ford focus 1.8 ghia last week . Belonged to one of the drivers in the yard who gave it to the head mechanic.
The mechanic sold it to me with a full MOT no tax for £350

72000 Miles full service history. Lots of reciepts for previous work done.
Included in the price the mechanic changed the front discs and pads.

He gave it an engine service for the cost of the parts. The bodywork is in quite good nick although the paint is beginning to flake at the top of the rear window.

Being the Ghia spec it has all the toys and they all work.

Only downside is the road tax is £240

Insurance is a surprisingly £212 fully comp with 9yrs ncb and I'm over 50

The interior is in decent nick too. A good hoover out and some new car mats should spruce up the interior.

Ot got a clue how to post pictures on these forums. Anyone care to help

    Cheers

  • Thanks for that buddy.

I have always bought new tyres. Not keen on part worn tyres. unless you know the history of the tyre personally I would steer clear.

Although if you get the right tyre at the right price then you can save a few bob buying part worn. But that's where I have a problem with part worn tyres.

You don't know if you have a bargain or a potential death trap.

I'll be getting 2 new front tyres after the MOT and had the tracking done. I will have the the tyre fitter put the part worn tyre onto the spare wheel as the tyre on the spare is bald (was like that when I got the car last year).
