  • An 8v Astra a Chimp could fix.. Only thing likely with a MK4 Astra will be welding in the future... Easy enough. Should be reading about this success in 10 years time. Nice Choice.

As For the Daihatsu above I had a 3.1 Commercil Trooper bought off our then Fencing Contractor cheap as it ticked the Boxes.. It was rough as anything and had lived in fields... Afternoon of Scrubbing it up and Pair of seats and she was a nice truck. I Removed the rear Bumper on a gate post one morning which revealed the Cross member was non existant... Sunday Morning with the welder and 2 Pieces of Angle Iron, which was all I hasd to make a Box section she was stronger than she was made!!...

Indeed..I, too, would DIY it, as I have all the welding gear, the space, the kit...but older age means I'd rather let someone else get the aches and pains for now...preferring to pay for it doing overtime at the tax-payers' expense.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

That has made this chimp very happy! There is zero rust on the car and no issues with the paintwork except for a small scratch on the drivers door possibly made with a key when trying to find the lock in the dark. It does have remote locking but the fob doesn't work. I have been told that it is fixable but likely to break again in a week due to the poor design of the key fob and is a common fault.

It is nice to open the bonnet and be able to see where everything in the engine is and get access to it as there is so much space in there. In normal driving the temp gauge doesn't move, again been told is common fault but have revved it stationary to get it hot to see that fan kicks in- it does. Doesn't get as warm as the Saab or as quick as I found out at 05:30 on Friday when it was -2.5, and I miss the heated seats and mirrors. Has air con though so summer will be comfortable. Nice to have a car that doesn't need filling up every time you pass a petrol station!

jim. re the presets.. swap red and yellow (iirc) wires around and it should store them,

also had the pre cat 02 sensor replaced today.. what a ball ache.. 2 hours with heat and force and with the manifold off it was the original sensor its done well to last 13 years.
all the time running about with a knackered 02 sensor has killed the cat dead, so replacing that tomorrow and the rear 02 sensor cost me £174 all in. ( Mate helped me out )

decided to start putting some cash away now to go towards another motor if any more major expenses crop up on the meggy

  • I have been asked to get rid of a Micra mk3 in the Cardiff area with about 100k miles. The MOT expired but its not been tested or used in 6 months, so if anyone here with a good forum account wants to pick it up feel free to message me.

If it passes the MOT fine then just make a donation to charity you feel is fair and call it a favour to a fellow forumite.

My last car I gave to a guy who would offroad race it and it had 130bhp and was a great little car but had door damage, some sill damage so this was a fitting 'Valhalla' type ending to its days I thought. This micra is not that exciting but I think it should last a few more years and it was working, well kept up until parked for 6 months however it is 10 years old so certainly a banger

I got an original Vauxhall CD player for £34 delivered, popped it in ( thank god I had the instruction book as setting the code was pita to do) and hey presto the steering controls worked and the rear speakers, sounds great and even came with a ministry of sound trance cd left in it which makes a nice change from my Monday to Friday Bob Dylan obsession.
  • My 2001 Megane has started making a droning noise when driving. Not sure what it could be, exhaust blowing somewhere or perhaps low on oil as not checked for a while. Although I've not seen any oil leak patches on the ground.

And it has just topped 100K miles this morning :D

droning? maybe wheel bearing or a pulley on its way out..

decided against the cat in the end if it needs one at mot ill get it done.

Checked some YouTube videos and it doesn't seem to be the same sort of noise. It's more a heavy loud 'BRROOMM' noise.

Thinking back it could be similar to what my sister's 2002 Punto made when it was very low on oil once. So checked the Megane oil and it seems to be halfway between the max and low markers. I'll top it up when I get some and see if that makes a difference.

MOT due next month (can take it from 17th Feb to preserve anniversary date) and I'm sure it'll need new brake pads at least.

Easy way to check if the droning is engine or wheel related - when it's droning, put the clutch in and rev the engine. If the droning noise changes with the revs, it's probably an engine pulley. If the noise stays the same as you rev, it's coming from the wheels - most likely a bearing as already suggested.
