Bought for £300
Kept passign MOT's with nothing needed ever
Traded for £500 2 years later with zero issues as the number plate ended in STE so the bloke thought I was called steve, quick lookup and the number plate alone was worth £500
Literally profitted.
Good result...but why sell on f it's still good??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
That’s my biggest worry when I come to buy it. How do you know it’s not something that a fellow bangernomics follower has deemed no longer worthwhile. Any tips?
Same as anything else....give it a really good look over, test drive, docs & MoT history check......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I wonder what makes a "banger" nowadays, because back in the late eighties to mid nineties, my car mad mate and I used to buy our cars from auctions, mostly for under £200. We never had one break down on us, so we were a bit lucky and the variety was great - Alfas, BMW's, Triumphs, Rovers as well as the staple Capris and Cortinas.0

Do you think that holds true now though? I’d hope it is but get the feeling people put the problem cars through auction. Not being able to give it a good test drive is a big miss. That said I reckon you could get some bargains if you’re lucky.0 -

Thing is, cars back then (that you'd be paying under, say, £700 for) were pretty unreliable and many had the potential to rust to bits even if they didn't break down
These days, and on this thread especially, under £1K is considered a banger, but the standard of said banger is higher today than it was 20-30 years ago (even if they're not as easily repairable like they were 20-30 years ago)

Crap ones Triumph Acclaim shredded a valve after a week Austin Montego blew the head gasket. Currently using a 1991 Dawes mountain bike bought for £20 for work, Each ride saves me £1.50 in petrol and I can use the managers' car park to lock it up. Done over 100 commutes.
My first ever bike back in 1977 was a Dawes and cost - £20:D0 -

Our second car would be considered a banger by today's standards - Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi PD 2005 180K - but the thing is, it is really solid, nothing like a 14 year old car of yesteryear.
It would probably be worth around £500, so not worth selling.
We took it to Salzburg and back a couple of years ago and it was fine.0 -

That's because they don't rust and rot away like cars of yesteryear did. Unless it's a MK1 Primera or MK1 Ka.0
