...and the Bangernomics success continues :)

Mrs.G-J's Mondeo passed it's MoT today, with just a couple of side repeater indicators needed - £11 and another year :D

We've had it 5 years already and it was £1k when we bought it..

I'll be keeping it 5+ years so will be back in the game soon enough.
  • I suppose I'd better update the current state of my parsimonious travel.
Recently did a top end overhaul on the old GS850 and replaced rings. The old rings weren't worn, but it was sensible to replace them.
I took the opportunity to fit new valve seals and lap the valves in a touch.

It only came apart to fix the base gasket leak, which happens to every one of these engines at any mileage between 30k and 50k. Guaranteed.
This is the third or fourth one I've done in the past 25+ years.
Fitted a new set of Delkovich exhaust headers, but was struck by a sudden attack of stinginess and refused to pay the extra 150 quid for their silencer, opting instead to fit a Hardly standard muffler (Hardly owners commonly take the standard mufflers off and replace them with noisier ones, in the fond notion it gives them extra cred or something. This leads to a glut of hardly-used standard mufflers on the 'bay).
I modified that a bit and it's running fine.
Now doing some fine tuning on the single SU carb I fitted years ago. It's always run ok with that carb but it's never been quite right, so this time around I'm running an AFR gauge to dial it in correctly.
So, costs.... the rebuild cost a few hundred, but it should be good for another decade at least.

Need to change my car at the start of April so have started looking to see if I can find any bargains. Doesn’t seem to be much coming up at the moment. I imagine there will be a lot in March because of part ex’s.

Do you find it’s better to source from private sellers? I worry garages do what they can to get a banger running and then sell it.

Wondering whether it’s better buying a car that’s super cheap with issues and then using the spare cash to fix them.

Mainly looking at private sellers in this price range...however occasionally a trader may have a cheapie worth looking at. Keep refreshing your autotrader search page ;)

Do you only use autotrader to find them then? I’ve been using Facebook marketplace and eBay mainly.

No, but mainly AT. Keep an eye out on the side of the roads around you, often a bargain can be had (like my current Ford Fusion diesel). I've looked at (and bought) via gumtree, but not as yet via face-slap or fleabay :)
