It's for my OH to replace her Mondeo and most of the use is a weekly shopping trip of about 45 miles plus a couple of 30 mile round trips to see her mum each week, all on cou try A roads and dual carriageway. So fuel isn't a big factor really and the rest of the costs pretty much match the Mondy.

Fair point... we've got an 03-plate diesel mondy, been a good car :)

    Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
More good bangernomics news today :)

The 525TD just passed its MOT with advisories for rear tyres and rear pads getting low (both already known about, not due quite yet).

Have been running it for about 5 years now, cost nothing (well, cost a replacement car for the owner 2 years after we got it but that's a long story), has needed 2 sets of tyres, a wheel bearing, an aux belt with tensioner, 2 front shocks, an exhaust and a pair of rear subframe bushes over the past 40k miles (it's now on 104k total on a "L" plate!)

Not bad for an overall 36mpg in relative wafty comfort!

Dodged a bullet on the Daewoo today.

Did the timing belt as planned, and found the old one with no tension left at all - the tensioner was right over against its stop with no spring pressure at all and there was an easy 10 - 15mm deflection in the "pull" side of the belt!

All good now, so still a bargain :)

I wish I could do my own mechanicals on cars, I would of saved thousands over the years.

OK, it's now my 2-year anniversary of the £10 Ford Fusion 1.4TDCi :D

    Summary:-

Total cost to buy, put it through 2 MoTs (brake lines, ball joint), ad-hoc rear wheel bearings and a coil spring and 4 part-worn tyres = £595 which should last 'till next MoT in April 2020, so 2 yrs 8 months :)

    Running costs:-

    £30p.a. road tax x2 (just done the third year's too) = £90

Insurance - £310 first year, £198 second year, and renewed Apr-ish at £195

    Fuel:-

18,000 mles in 2 yrs, overall average is 60.24mpg, and at an average cost of £1.24 per litre of diesel - all fuel & mleage logged on a spreadsheet so I know it's accurate :D

Overall it's been a cracking little motor and still going strong....wouldn't surprise me if this becomes my longest-serving and overall cheapest banger to-date...well happy with it :)

That looks like an E34 Joe. We had one (a 520i) in the same colour and took it for a few long trips across Europe. It was very solid and very smooth running, and I ended up selling it to a mate when it had 160K on the clock.

It's one of those 'not well liked but nothing wrong with it' cars.
Some countries got a 4x4 version with roof rails and better looks. These could have sold well in the uk even as 2wd.

Even this which could be done as a wrap is an improvement.

OK, so just added ALL costs (purchase, repairs, tax, insurance and fuel, there's no depreciation involved) for 2 years, and it comes in at 16p per mile.... I'm happy with that :)
