    That's the beauty of Bangernomics, it gives you soo much choice on a very small budget :)

    Bangers are only for those who know how to service cars like spark plugs, oil filter, you will also need to some internal car products for cleaning seats and making the plastic shine. You can't take short cuts, soda for battery terminals - contact fluid on all ground connections even the alternator connection than dielectric grease, lithium grease on door hinges, red rubber grease on bushings, metal brush with anti rust gel under the car, contact fluid in the fag hole etc.

    Sorry, you made me laugh. When you said about making sure the seats were clean and making sure the plastics shine.

    With bangers I think you need a good basic knowledge of how to fix cars as the whole point of after you've hopefully bought a good runner is servicing, fixing faults yourself and keeping it in the road.

    Only run bangers here!

    I know they don’t all have them. But the Peugeot’s I’ve been in that don’t were awful. Just ridiculous slow and clunky. I’m not expecting a banger to drive like an F-TYPE but a petrol is likely to be more responsive than a diesel without a turbo.

    I’ve not had to repair a turbo before but know a few who have. All of which said it was several hundred quid. How much do you tend to spend per car?

    Any small diesel will cruise easily at 70, what more do you want? OK, they may not accelerate at a rate of knots, but adjust your drving style & expectatons and you'll be fine ;)

    Spend on what? Buying a car, or repairs? Or both?

    Lupo SDI. No turbo. Slow as hell, never stopped me from driving 90+ thousand miles in it.... including trips down motorways and from ends of the country to the other.

    Just about to head to Germany in my 281,000 mile, £650 BMW 330d. If that's not brave, I don't know what is! :D
    Off from sunny Southport to a Pokemon Go event in Dortmund, and then a couple of laps of the 'Ring - then stopping in Amersham for an overnight halt before heading back.

    The oldest car and highest mileage in my fleet, and yet the only one with working A/C. :)
    Another clean MOT pass this year, just a shame the VED is quite high (but kind of expected with an inline 6 engine running on tractor fuel!)

    Original turbo and engine, but pretty much everything else has been replaced over the car's lifetime. :p
    Rather odd spec on this one, 16:9 widescreen stereo (original) and the elusive Harmon Kardon sound system - but no heated seats or electrical adjustment! Usually all of the above was specced by people with too much money :D

    Also, the market for bangers seems terribly slow at the moment so there's some bargains to be had - I haven't been able to sell an Accord Diesel with full Exec spec with low miles for £750! Madness

    I meant buying a car but would be interesting to know repairs too.

    Although a short commute. It’s a bit stop start so wouldn’t want something super slow. Won’t be getting to 70 that often.

    That is an odd spec. Does any kind of mileage concern you? I start getting concerned at about 150k so to do 281k I’d share your concern! Just wondering what people tend to look out for. Impressive it’s still got its original turbo.

    Where do you tend to look? I use auto trader and Facebook marketplace. At what point do you shift things on? I thought it was about running them till it’s scrap.

    Might spend £3-400 on buying, and repairs depends on what cost/how good the car is. E.g. my current Ford Fusion 1.4TDCi cost me a nett £10 (sold last car for £280 and paid £290 for this one) and I've had it coming up 2 yrs.

    So far I've spent £250-ish on first MoT (brake pipe replacement), and £60-ish on second MoT. HAd to have rear wheel bearings done inbetween times (£130 for both). Check back on my posts on this thread for more details :)

    The car is decent and is cheap as it gets to run, so if, say, the clutch needed doing, I'd probably spend £300 to do that and have the car for several more years after that.

    As for your second point, it doesn't matter how fast/slow your car is if you're in stop/start traffic - get over it!! ;)
