Your Bangernomics successes

Most I'll pay for a banger is £400 tops. Too many about where folk are asking silly money for. Wise I'd rather spend upwards of £5k+ on something decent.0

Might spend £3-400 on buying, and repairs depends on what cost/how good the car is. E.g. my current Ford Fusion 1.4TDCi cost me a nett £10 (sold last car for £280 and paid £290 for this one) and I've had it coming up 2 yrs.
So far I've spent £250-ish on first MoT (brake pipe replacement), and £60-ish on second MoT. HAd to have rear wheel bearings done inbetween times (£130 for both). Check back on my posts on this thread for more details
The car is decent and is cheap as it gets to run, so if, say, the clutch needed doing, I'd probably spend £300 to do that and have the car for several more years after that.
As for your second point, it doesn't matter how fast/slow your car is if you're in stop/start traffic - get over it!!
Fair comment.
When you say sold, at what point do you tend to sell? Or do you mean sold it to a scrapper? I always thought it was about running these in until they aren’t economical to fix. Thus, why would anyone except for a scrapper take it.0 -

It really depends on circumstances....the one before last I sold with 1 month's MoT and the failure sheet from the test just done (parts were reasonable, but the labour charges would have made it not economical for me, but to a DIYer mechanic/has a mechanic mate, they could have got it through the test for a couple of hundred - but it was also a high tax bracket, so I got shut at that point.
The last one I sold with 6-7 months MoT on it, only a couple of minor niggles but it was a petrol and I wanted to go back to diesel (for the overall running costs). I only sold it on (autotrader, gumtree and signs in the windows) once I'd found & bought the Fusion.
The last one I actually scrapped was the one before these three......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

Cheers. That’s good to know. Have you ever considered doing Japanese imports? You aren’t going to get a car for £400, probably closer to £1k but on the right models you’d get a car that would last you a fair few years I’d expect.0 -

TBH, no. Findng the right kind of model (small diesel, £30 tax bracket, 60mpg) in the Jap import market would be nigh-on impossible I'd imagine.
As for longevity, my last three have lasted me 2.5yrs, 2.5 yrs and the current one coming up 2 yrs and counting......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

That’s true. It’s a very high mix of petrols in that market. I’d be happy with 2.5 years.0 -
OK sold my 2.8 Fourtrak on Friday since was getting too expensive to run & repair and looking for a car under £600 with MOT for the motorways commuting (normally around 900 miles per month) so whats good to look at these days please??0

Big/small car needed? Older Mondeo diesel if big (good mpg on runs but high-ish VED, or Ford/Peugot/etc. smaller (around 1.4) for £30 VED...
It depends on size required and what you want to achieve in overall running costs......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Just looking for something that can handle motorway commuting so can save up for something nicer in the spring. MPG and running costs are the most mportant.
Whats VED?0 -

Vehicle Excise Duty - the annual road tax to us old duffers
1.4 TDCi fiesta or similar? I do 30-mile commute in a Fusion (same engine) and it's averaged 60.x mpg over almost 2 yrs and £30 pa road tax.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
