No, but mainly AT. Keep an eye out on the side of the roads around you, often a bargain can be had (like my current Ford Fusion diesel). I've looked at (and bought) via gumtree, but not as yet via face-slap or fleabay :)

Do you not find that traders will probably just do anything to mask a problem and get it running though? Else I don’t get where the margin is for them even if it is a px they want to clear.

Don't worry about traders and their margins - ALWAYS buy on condition down at banger price levels...there are some gems out there to be found :)

Fair point. I’m finding they’re all junk though! Not even bothered about the cosmetics. They all seem to have problems that are tricky to diagnose from a drive. Admittedly only seen a handful. But had to broaden my horizons and up the max tax filter on autotrader to £210. Trying to find a pre dpf saloon/estate.

I'd have a look at Mondeos....Mrs.G-J's 2003 one we've had for 5 years (2ltr diesel) and it's been a bl00dy good car...paid £995 for it and been very reliable. Apart from a brake caliper nowt gone other than a few normal consumable bits (exhaust & tyres)

What sort of yearly mileage do you bangernomics people do? My car is approaching banger status, 9 years old and 104000 miles and I am doing 14000 a year. Do I keep it or time to move on? Focus 1.6 diesel

I’m doing 10k per year but not doing bangernomics yet. Once I’ve moved I’m going to start so will be doing about 3k from that point so really not worth having an expensive car for that.

Had it a while and know it well? Any major issues? If you know the car well and no major issues, why wouldn't you keep it?? Just because you do 14k a year, why would you think of getting shut??

Had it for 8 years and no problems, just thinking about how long before the DPF needs replacing. Has anyone replaced one? how much does it cost?

    I've a 125k Mondeo 2.0TDCI 59 plate. Doing 12k a year.
It had the timing belt kit done at 105k when I bought it, and there were receipts with the car for a new dmf and clutch a year before.
Hoping it'll do a good few years yet.
Had a DPF fault a couple of months after buying, it was a brittle hose that had disintegrated. £20 and its been fine since.
Obviously different cars, but I wouldn't worry for now.
  • I think my car might be considered a banger? I've got a 2006 Nissan Note, 1.6 petrol automatic. Just hit 60,000 miles.
Had it since 2013, it used to be my Dad's and he gave it to me for £0
I had to spend £350 on it about 4 years ago to fix the subframe mounts but that's it apart from the usual tyres, wiper blades etc
Hoping to get it to 20 years old at least, much to the annoyance of my husband who calls it a shed
