I don't think there is any "structural" rust.  The offside (driver) front wing is very rusty for some reason, but also superficial.  Someone kindly added some "go faster" indentations to the nearside (passenger) during Beast from the East, but this is not rusting and they generously left the mirror intact.  Other than that, I think the bodywork is fine.
There are some niggly electrics, but I get round that.
I think the shocks are shot.  Last MOT had an advisory on the NSF and the rears are knocking far more than they really ought to.

I am generally minded to take the view that anything up to £1k is tolerable as that is 3 months-worth of payments / depreciation of a new car and gets me another year of motoring.
  • Is my car "Bangernomics"?  I think it may be.  2007 Focus petrol bought March 2016 for £2k with 33k miles.  Bought as a "stop-gap", not because of any fundamental commitment to "Bangernomics".

It has the Zetec engine so could well run for ever, it is certainly reliable if not refined and all a bit squeeky and rattly now.  MOT coming up again next month and just about 145k miles now.  I've not really had any issues with it apart from normal wear and tear.

I don't have time to do my own servicing so use the local independent garage, last MOT was £600 to get through and then had brakes after 3 months £350 and four new tyres just before Christmas.

I was seriously considering a new vehicle earlier in the year but now thinking to hold on to it, especially as I am doing far fewer miles and unable to predict what future needs will be when "new normal" is established.  I have only just clicked over 1,000 miles since lockdown started.

Within the "Bangernomics" mind-set, what is the most I should "invest" in this car to clear another MOT and another year of motoring?
I'd keep it unless you really want a new car.

It sounds like an excellent bangernomic contender.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • Not technically bangernomic but I've just had my 2014 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI Navigator with 71K miles on the clock MOT'd today and it passed with flying colours apart from one silly advisory about under trays being fitted.

It's coming up to to the first year of ownership and it has cost me nothing in repairs and maintenance. However I've just bought some new wiper blades and air and cabin filters to fit and I'm planning on getting the oil & filter changed in the next week or so.

    Bargain motoring.
  • My Punto went through the MOT ok yesterday 2 years of ownership , but does need a new clutch I think but not that expensive around £170.

Not strictly bangernomics but 2004 MK1 focus purchased for £5k 10 years back and still going strong! If it wasn't for the dreaded rust (which my car has on the subframe surface) I would be telling everyone and their dog to get a MK1 focus!!
Not sure what will replace it but till then will keep it going as long as I can!

Not really what I would class a bangernomic, as in do nothing to it other than fill it with fuel when needed and hope that it will keep going for ever!
The engines need good basic maintenance otherwise they can cost serious money:
That said we had one in the family that was eventually scrapped due to an accident after 10 years and 138,000 with none of the above mentioned problems but it was DIY serviced regularly e.g. regular Fully-Synthetic oil and filter changes, cambelt/coolant pump etc.
The brake load sensing valve will fail the MOT if not regularly maintained.
Can achieve good MPG but not a car to skimp maintenance on!

This must just be the 1.6HDI then. I had a 1.4HDI and I never changed the oil in the 3 and bit years I owned it. Never had a problem. Only repairs it ever needed were 2 front springs.
  • My husband's Kia has passed every mot, except needing new tyres once. Had new brake pads. That's it.
He commutes to work everyday and it's done 92k since we've had it.
Not quite bangernomics as it cost us £3k. But definetly pretty good for nearly 7 years of ownership.
