A lot of sales on Gumtree these days are just that. Lads who fancy earning a few extra quid tax free on the weekend, so they go round buying old cars with a month's MOT off old Mrs Pennyapple who has just decided to knock it on the head.

Buy them up, get them through an MOT with the least amount of work, sell them for x profit.

Aprt from paying more, is that a problem vs just buying it off Mrs Pennyapple?

Not at all... it was the guy above who seemed to have an issue with it. I personally prefer it to be done like that. Afterall, Mrs Pennaypple might not have had that noisy wheel bearing sorted and that's an MOT failure.

Where I would take issue with it is when they're claiming to be a private seller and shirking their legal responsibilities as a trader. Although are they still a trader if just doing a couple a year?

I know what you're saying, but what they're doing is akin to buying stuff from a charity shop and then marking it up. Not sure how that lies with you. There's no warranty offered, but having stuck 12 months on it, you're paying as much for the MOT than anything else.... and I like that.
  • They usually just sell on for quick profit doing very little to it. If it needs noticeable repairs they will be bodged, and if it needs an MOT they will get their mate in the know to do a very lenient test.

To be fair, testers at your local garage might be more lenient than other places. It's all a bit of a game really.

..and, Mrs.G-J's 53-plate Mondeo passed it's MoT yesterday with no work needed :) We've had it 4 years and it was (just) a banger when bought (£1k), and it's been a great car :)

OK, so it needed both rear bearings doing, not too bad at £130 all-in. This should mean that only a couple of rear tyres may be needed for MoT in April barring any major disasters :)

It's nice and quiet above 30mph again :D

Bangernomics cuts carbon emissions. Making a car last 200,000 miles instead of 100,000 halves the total lifecycle carbon emissions including its fuel. Amazing how unfashionable and unsupported by governments bangernomics is then.
