Your Bangernomics successes

I love it when someone says something like this in an advert:
Ford KA, really good condition, great car, losing water..... easy fix for someone.
Who is someone? A mechanic? A guy who works on engines for a living? If a car is losing water (and I quote from an example I just found on gumtree) then it could well have a blown headgasket or a seriously compromised coolant system.....
Easy fix though innit Gav.0 -
Just wondered what peoples thoughts are on Mot length when buying a banger car I know longer the better but this does not always mean a car without problems.0

I always type "CAR 12" in gumtree when looking for a banger and use the filters to tailor your budget. You'll find all cars regardless of their condition but you'll know they have a 12 month warranty.
The way I see it, a banger should be a yearly thing..... and by owning one with 12 months, if the exhaust develops a hole after 3, you can still legally (questionably) drive it for many months longer.0 -

Can't agree with that one, just a year?? No way, should be as long as possible...for example, the last 3 before the Fusion (now in it's 13th month) were:-
1. Rover 25 - 2.5 years
2. Vectra diesel - 2.5 yrs
3. 309 diesel - 1 yr 'coz the head gasket blew
4. Saxo - 3.5 years (I think, over 3 anyway, prob closer 3.5)
With the Fusion it's sooo cheap to run it's actually going to be worth spending a bit on it to keep it going, cheaper in the long run
Anyway, back to the question.. if you get 12 months ticket, great, but if it's less it's not the end of the world. Check the advisories, how much will that cost to sort? e.g. 3 brake lines on the Fusion were advisories when I got it with 7-8 months MoT, it needed 4 doing to pass last test, so next one should be relatively easy...if it was rot on chassis/subframe/etc. I probably would have walked away and kept lookingThis on top of the condition when viewing.
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Gunjack how comfortable are the fusion seats? cheers0

They're ok...not the "comfy armchair" of the Rover, but no hard sides (like the semi-bucket seats on a lot of cars these days), firm and supportive......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Very true GJ on the chassis/subframe, as I looked at an almera Mot history I was interested in with a short MOT and saw it was stated as being very rusted on the sub frame so I left it.
On a funny note I have came across some ads with typos best ones so far
2 litter Golf
And a focus with no licks LoL0 -

I've recently decided that MK4 Golf's are the ultimate 'avoid' banger unless you can find one that hasn't already been used as a banger, if so, it's the ultimate banger. Confused? Basically, they're great cars and they're dead cheap. They're reliable, run really well even with high mileage, quite good fuel economy and have various trim levels.
It's no surprise that you regularly find them being sold with 180k miles on etc and looking utterly abused.... seats that look like a coal miner has been sat on them for 20 years for example. They clearly have been identified as a really reliable and surprisingly comfortable motor and in the last few years have turned into that standard 'tradesman' vehicle.... throw your oily tools in the back and be on your way kind of car. These are the ones that won't have been looked after though..... Avoid. VW's superb engineering can only account for so much.
Find one with 80k miles on though, driven by that middle aged school teacher from down the road....... you've got a long term banger right there.0
