And only £30 tax? I thought old deisels would be £220 a year?
A proper bangernomics car the Fusion

The emissions-based tax came in in April 2001, older than that it was on engine size - up to 1549cc = £150p.a., over that is £250-ish.

    My Fusion is 2003 ;)

  • My bangernomics days are beyond me but the best bargain I ever had was a 1995 rover 420 diesel bought for £650 in 2005 with 6 months tax and a full MOT.

In the 4 years I owned it all I needed to splash out for was new tyres, brake discs and an exhaust back box, it always started first time and never broke down. In the end I scrapped it due to bodywork corrosion.
  • My first car in 1991 was a hand me down 1979 850cc mini- in turd brown! I couldn't understand that my Great Uncle had walked into a mini showroom and bought a car brand new and when asked about the colour choose the colour of a turd. The mind boggles! Red, white or perhaps a green sir? No, I'll take the brown.

I hope it never makes a retro 70's comeback.
Cars in the 70s are characterised in my memory as being purple metallic or turd brown, especially the latter for BL. That's not to say only BL cars were that, for some incomprehensible reason it was quite a popular colour from other makers, too.
I can live quite happily with the purple metalflake, but a turd brown car would be meeting Mr Dulux as soon as possible.

Sky blue seemed to be pretty common too, only barely a step up from turd brown.

I have had a good look around ebay and it is full of Rover parts should I need any- I currently have the wining bid on a Haynes manual so I can really get to know the car should I need to.

I will be the first to admit that this is a gamble, no nice new car with no faults or warranty should any arise, hell, I’ve bought a car from a now defunct manufacture, how will this effect me?

Don't worry about the defunct manufacturer - a petrol Rover 600 (excluding the 620 Ti, which yours isn't) is mechanically identical to the Honda Accord of the same age. Keep an eye on eBay for a replacement Rover radio, but they all tend to shed buttons like yours. It's a single DIN slot so any cheap radio/CD you can find locally will fit.

Keep an eye out for those alloys going porous and losing tyre pressure. The electric window mechanism in the front doors can be a problem - they bend/break and are difficult to repair. If yours are working properly, keep the window well lubricated to help them out.

Otherwise, relax and enjoy wafting around in your bargain cruiser :)

Ive had three more cars in the last six years but I did think the Rover was fab and did the job for the year that I had it. The electric window on the drivers side did fail, it kept falling off the mechanism. It was more economical than a 1.6 Astra I had a couple of years after!
  • I have always gone with older cars, my first was an 88 polo which I ran for several years, only having to recycle it when a speed bump fractured the petrol tank.

My current car is a 71 beetle which cost not a lot more than OPs starting thread car and has gone through two MOTs; first was fine the second needed a little work to the horn.

Cheapest car I have purchased was the above polo for £425, most expensive was a new beetle at £1200 (did a quick sale to my ex when moving), normally I just run them, do repairs as required and keep them going for as long as viable.

I personally do not see the point in new cars when older ones have plenty of life left in them.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

The Fusion is one of those cars with poor image but no real problems. Very mse.

Yeah...the image thing didn't help them, but there's lots of them around and not many for sale....think that says something :)
