re-main phone bt socket

That's what I thought but still got charged £130 for them changing a 25-30 year old socket - turned out it was damp corrosion.
I phoned to complain about the charge but they insisted socket was my responsibility. Now wish I had put a complaint in writing too.
If I had realised I could have changed it myself I would have given that a go first.
No, it is their responsibility unless it is user-inflicted damage. In this case, their get out of jail card would be that you are responsible for controlling the damp in the house, so it's chargeable.
Somehat dubious with a 30 year old master, but that's the approach they'll have taken. The OR engineers are under pressure to ensure that as much work as possible is chargeable back to the telcom or ISP.
You cannot legally touch a master socket. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
makes my blood boil!!! damp and corrision on a socket inside a house?!?! I'd ask to see the evidence and prove that the socket was damaged due to component damage on a test rig. Did the electronics look corroded? Were there dry joints? As for not leagally allowed to touch the socket (of which I know is true)..... i'd like to see them prove it in court. Rant over!0

I kind of agreeSomehat dubious with a 30 year old master, but that's the approach they'll have taken.
Exactly given the £'s we have paid in rental over the years. I would have thought that given the age of the socket a replacement should be covered by rental.makes my blood boil!!! damp and corrision on a socket inside a house?!?! It made my blood boil too, when the bill came in a couple of months later.
Yes, I knew the room was damp and I did see evidence of green corrosion on the old socket. Just wish I had looked and tried replacement myself (legal or not).0 -
But you don't pay line rental to OR-you pay it to BT Retail. OR will be absorbing the full cost of replacement unless they pass it on to Retail.
If you accept that that room was damp enough to cause corrosion, then I don't really see what complaint you have?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I'm sure it hasn't always been BT retail and Openreach over the 50 years they have paid line rental. If you accept that that room was damp enough to cause corrosion, then I don't really see what complaint you have?
Which is why I didn't take the complaint any further than one phone call.
It is just a tad annoying that Openreach have the monopoly - you can't choose a different (cheaper) engineer like you could for a gas boiler for example.0 -
Your local gas register plumber is not permitted to work on any gas pipework etc prior to and including the gas supply meter. That has to be done by the monopoly being Transco.
This is exactly the same as for BT Openreach. You or your own electricians are not permitted to work on the BT supply point(NTE5) or any part of the line before it.
In both cases you are quite welcome to get others to do the bits after the demarkation point.0 -

It’s not the same thing though is it.0 -

But there's no comparison. The gas boiler is your own property: BT own the master socket. Your gas engineer is not allowed to work on the meter or pipework upstream of it.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Hi Guys, It,s me again,. The fault I thought I fixed is still there. I told engineer it was ok, as it was. Then I had a text asking same , and text fixed or unfixed. As it was working, (Ithought) I texted fixed. Again they texted me to arrange an engineers appointment by 8pm or label on my line would be lifted. I didn,t reply.
Now today, it,s playing up again, only when ringing in.
Ring out ok.;;PC works okk. but not ringing in;;
Took plate off and plugged in to test socket, works ok..put plate back on..ok.
It seems to me to be the lower plate that,s faulty???
I have now got pc and phones plugged in test socket, is this safe????and for how long???Surely if it,s a BT plate, it,s thier job to fix it?? or TT noow..Trying without plate to see if it plays up again, before I report it again.
Also, caller display, always tells me new calls, even when answered straight away. Peed off having to go to all 4 phones and delete umpteen new calls. When it was BT, caller display disappeared after call, not with TT, still there.;could this have anything to do with problem.?ps, getting extra 3 megs now, 11.5 yesterday, was 8 tops before, o.5>1,5 wireless, hence, long ethernet cable.0 -
Had a problem here with the line, turned out to be a faulty nt5e which the BP Openreach replaced - I understood that the whole unit is their responsibility including the standard faceplate.
I usually assume that if connected to the test socket and the proiblem is the same with two separate sets of kit, then one can be as sure as one can that the problem is not yours.
When I say two separate sets of kit, for clients I test with theirs, and then with mine, eg filter, telcable, router and lappie.
Good luck with it.........
Beginning to sound very much like the problem we had - is there no way you can run a test suggested?0
