You forget other benefits such as LHA and CT. Then theirs CB/CTC if you have kids which tends to increase your LHA, free school meals and prescription costs.

When I've been reliant on benefits I've rented a room in a house share.

People are too picky and lack self reliance.
No I don't forget whatever LHA and CT is as I only get £67.50 so talking about what I get and how is that too high?

I had to be out of work 6 mths before I got free prescriptions & had to get in more debt borrowing money for emergency dentist treatment

Depending on savings and household income you can still get free prescriptions and dentist treatment without being on JSA for 6 months.

You would complete a HC1 form and if eligible then you are sent an exemption certificate lasting a year. Last time I was unemployed I sent my form in the day after my contract ended.

    1. I've never had this problem

    2. I've dumbed down my CV if it meant getting an interview.

    3. I've always moved to where the work is.

1, trust me I have had it three times recently and agencies telling me they can no longer help me.

    2. Why should I lie? Dumbing down a CV to get a job at NMW would look stupid when I have 20 years experience in accounts. I would be challenged on what I have been doing in those years if I take stuff off and what happens when a company gets a reference on you as I have seen one from my old co where they listed all the duties in my role. If I took some off my CV surely they would ask why they were different?

    2. I am talking about me living in East London/Essex and a company in Streatham, London not wanting to interview anyone that was not from the local area (local to Streatham).

So unless I lie and continue moving round London I am not sure what I should do.

If you have been offered a job subject to references it is unlikely that an employer will retract offer if a reference comes back saying you did more than you listed on your CV.

Its all about getting your foot in the door, in my case its led to quick progression within the companies Ive worked for.

As for not being local I've always included a section on my covering letters saying I am prepared to relocate at short notice.

This is from living and working in East London and Essex most of my working life.

so you would relocate to Streatham?? LOL It's 1 hr 15 from where I am!

So you get a foot in the door where there are no other jobs or routes from promotion and pretend when people show you how to do stuff that you have never done that before and YES if you are lying on the CV what else are you prepared to lie about?
They may still retract the offer as then you are over qualified for the junior job you have lied to get.

    Household income = zero
    savings = zero

Still have no free prescriptions for 6 mths, fact!

What is an HC1? You seem to know a lot to fill in a form the day after you lost a job?

I don't believe it is lying to tailor your CV to an application, so long as you don't mislead an employer about skills and qualifications. I.e You shouldn't state experience or qualifications you don't have.

Every single job an agency has put me forward for has advised me to strip out parts of my CV that aren't relevant to the role and add experience/skills that I have that isn't already listed.

People who list everything on their CV are going about it the wrong way, the only purpose of a CV is to show you have the relevant skills, knowledge and qualifications to do the job in order for you to progress to the interview stage. Anything else that doesn't sell you to the employer is a waste of space which could be better used.

Ok so if I take out the fact I have managed a payment run of £2million a month and €1million and the Intrastat Returns, and say what bank recs, audits, comparission reports etc the employer will ask me why I haven't progressed in 20 years? What do I say then?

I wouldn't put 20 years of experience on a CV in the first place. In my profession employers only care about the last 5.

I've used every interview to sell myself and elaborate on my CV.
