    FOUR HOURS!??!

Ok, rice pudding is off the menu!

If you fancied rice pudding, it only needs cooking for a couple of hours.

Use 4 oz pudding rice to 1 pint ordinary milk mixed with your tin of evaporated milk. Sugar to taste, about 1-2 oz. Stir it all together, bung in oven about 150 C. Stir occasionally, cook for two hours. Voila, creamy, gorgeous rice pudding!!

Forgot, lots of people like to put grated nutmeg on top, but I don't like it so I don't:D Also grease the casserole with butter first, or it'll stick like glue.

Thanks but it's too much effort for me, thought it would be easier than that! I got a couple of tins in the cupboard! Just wondered what i could do with this milk stuff.

    I'll chuck it :)

Don't chuck it, you can make a baileys type drink from it , I cant remember the quantities, but you need evap milk, camp coffee (liquid) and whisky, keep adding untill its to your taste and enjoy  ,I have made this several times and its delish, and sooo much cheaper than in the shop, you will need to keep it in the fridge once made x enjoy

     NO! tinned rice pudding is no where near as nice as your own, it's easy, you just put ingredients in the oven ( in a bowl) on a low heat and you have a fabulous pudding, with hopefully lots of lovely brown skin on the top. OOh! I think I'll do one for tomorrows dinner:p and I like to use ordinary milk, not evaporated, though you can use that if you like.

i use evaporated milk for mine but i am lazy and do it in a pan on the hob, rinse the pan with water and bring the milk to the boil add sugar and rice, simmer slowly giving a stir now and again, same amounts as the oven version

you can add a little lemon juice to the evap milk and whisk with an electric hand held whisk till thick, dissolve a jelly in 1/4pt water and mix into the milk thoroughly, leave to set, yummy

blimey churchmouse i have never timed it, it was all part of making the dinner for five but not that long, no longer than about 3/4 hr if that, must say i never measured the rice but rinse the pan with water first should be easier to clean, remember to stir now and again, we all liked it and i did sago and semolina too, we always seemed to have a pudding then, give it a go anyway

I do it in a pan on the hob too (and I use lazy quick cook rice, but wash it first :D ), just add milk, sugar, cinnamon, cardamom, add a handful of rice boil until the rice is cooked stirring consantly and adding more milk and water gradually. Doesn't taste as good as the oven baked stuff and is stickeir, but better than the tinned :)

  • " Too much effort " ?? Blimmin' heck, how much effort does it take to throw together a rice pudding and pretty much leave it to do its own thing in the oven for a couple of hours ?? especially as you could cook an equally quickly thrown together casserole and a few jacket spuds at the same time ? which you could either freeze the excess and/or be sorted for dinner/lunches for a couple of days ?

Ok... you hear that odd, pained thumping noise... that is the sound of me banging my head against my desk. Repeatedly.
