To be honest no - i started freezing as DD wanted grated cheese in her sandwiches every day so i grated a load and i found it went mouldy quicker in the fridge than if it stayed in a block. I have some in there 6 months old and it's fine still, so maybe 12 months? possibly more.0 -
I find that cheese dries out when frozen, so only stash cheese for cooking in the freezer. But I agree with the £5/kg price as being good.

They seem to come in pre-grated so would you need to separate into smaller portions and then defrost as needed? If anyone knows a safe way to defrost cheese I'd be keen to know as I'm clueless, thanks.

It's always worth looking at the cheese on Sainsburys deli counter. They always have one cheese on promo. Whilst shopping for my mum she wanted red Leicester so I put Sainsburys basics in my basket only to discover branded red Leicester on the deli counter over 50p cheaper (and it wasn't the cheese on offer).0

Buy one get one free on Lake District mature cheddar at the cooperative, Valid until 6th March.
Edit; Forgot to mention, £3.99 each.0 -
Grated cheese nearly always cheaper than lumps.
Depends on the cheese. Stuff for cooking is one thing, stuff for fancy cooking another and if you are a cheese snob, another deal again.
Morrisons used to have grated cheese ends, all mixed up on their deli counter. Okay on toast or in butties with pickles. Not for a fancy cheese board.0 -
I freeze cheese grated. Its mainly blocks of cheese I seen in the reduced or have a small piece left and have no plans to use it in the next week. Once out of the freezer, it takes about 30 mins to defrost.0

Most ready-grated cheese has got added potato starch which can make it a bit gloopy in cooking and can taste a bit bland. I generally use it in cheese sauce (e.g. for cauli) and then grate some 'real' cheese on top for extra flavour.0
