Cheapest cheese? Where from?

Hi

I need cheap cheese. I don't mind freezing it.

Where's the best place to get cheap cheese? Supermarkets, markets or farmers markets? Is there a list of farmers markets so I know where nearest one is?

Thanks

IF you have one nearby then you will have a great choice just like the supermarket but more for your money.

Choice of grated, slices, or just a huge block of the normal cheese, and of the others I think it's slices and blocks - but still bigger portions the the supermarkets.

It really depends on what you want. For a while, I've worked on £5 per kg being a good price for mature cheddar. I prefer this as a basic cheese as it gives more flavour in cooking. This week it's £5.60ish in Tesco for Pilgrims Choice or Cathedral City. A bit more than I wanted to pay but still good compared with some.
  • Also, Lake District Mature Cheddar Cheese (400g) £2 (£5/Kg) at ASDA.

Lidl do occasional weekend half price offers on cheese. Last was Edam 94p for 400g's. Freezes OK.

Asda have a few different £1.50 packs at the moment which work out at £5 kg

  • Those big packs from the link are cheap but how do you freeze and defost cheese? They seem to come in pre-grated so would you need to separate into smaller portions and then defrost as needed? If anyone knows a safe way to defrost cheese I'd be keen to know as I'm clueless, thanks.

You can just get cheese out of the freezer and leave in the fridge overnight or on the counter top for a few hours.
I thought what good buys where in that link, but 10kg is a lot to keep isn't it.

I freeze grated cheese, it stays seperated once it's frozen so you just take out what you need, as it's grated it defrosts quickly too. I use it frozen in the morning to make packed lunches and it is defrosted at lunch time even kept in an insulated lunch box with a frozen yoghurt.

That cheese looks like fantastic value, need to order a chest freezer and then i can order some cheese!!!
