my mum has been mother of the bride twice, both times she waited until she'd seen the colours of the bridesmaid dresses, then she's gone out with the bride to be and bought her own outfit. She's not the type to be "told what to wear" though ;).

My mum knew the colour of the bridesmaid dress, and then went shopping with my dad for her outfit. Mother of the Groom knew the colour of my mum's outfit then bought hers.

I'll be choosing my own, I know the colour of my daughters dress and I will try to accommodate it but it will be what I want in the end.

She wouldnt dream of telling me what to wear.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Are you being told what to wear?

Can you compromise? Is it the colour? The design? The length? The material?

I would want to choose my own, but as I have only sons I would try to discreetly find out what colours the MOB was wearing and steer clear.

A friend of mine has a daughter getting married in September, and I also know the mother of the groom (though she doesn't) the MOG knew what colours the MOB was having yet she has bought a suit in the same/similar colours "because she fell in love with it" and "it won't matter on the day" I hope she is right.

My mother proceeded to announce she was buying a hat, and showed up with something that, in all the photos, even she will admit looks like she's got a giant green lettuce on her head. (She also showed up wearing white - but since I was wearing purple to get married in that wasn't a massive problem)

I have been both mother of the bride and mother of the groom and I chose what suited me.
