Criminy - I am feeling incredibly guilty about my outgoings over the last few weeks - need to start reining it in, but it feels like the worst possible time!

I had an ok time at the work lunch yesterday, but between lunch, the pub and the takeaway I had that evening, I spent something like £60. I have also had 3 takeaways and 2 trips to the pub in a fortnight and my recycling bin has a fair few beer cans in it... :o

Not quite sure where to start with the better habits - any suggestions? I was thinking that aiming for no more midweek booze, not salting food after cooking and limiting us to no more than 1 takeaway a month might be sensible starters? Mrs E is off to the gym, also making me feel guilty.

£15 payments into the OP Pot and the EF again today, at least I'm sticking to my *financial* goals.
  • I added up my mid week booze and decided to give it up although had a few slips..

  • Sounds more like a new year decision than a pre Christmas one! But very good idea to avoid midweek drinking.
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

Probably worth pointing out that Christmas Day is a Tuesday and New Year's Eve a Monday...................
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Edinburgher Where on earth do you find these £15 daily overpayments from? You are putting me to shame, I make one big(ish) one when the normal mortgage payment goes in then I sit and wait for the next month whilst trying to get the odd cashback on things to help bump the OP's up a bit! Looking back on your posts its pretty amazing going! :T

Thanks VMD - I've actually got my driving instructor to thank for the £15 payments (£30 a day because I save our emergency fund at a 1:1 ratio). He got sick just before a driving lesson and cancelled, which pushed out the date before we needed to book another block, saving us £630 :T

    Don't think I routinely have a spare £30/day, I'm not rich :rotfl:

£15 into both the OP Pot and the EF today - just about to hoover before Mrs E comes back from her driving lesson and then off to the pub for a leisurely lunch and a couple of pints. I'll behave myself, but it is a challenge having a pub with its own microbrewery within a 10 minute walk.

I believe we're now down to 1-2 presents left to buy, so I can start to take stock of the damage before payday on the 20th (early for Christmas). We'll definitely be able to make another £500 payment to Santander before the new year.
  • Mr E, enjoy the pub. If Mr T had a micro brewery 10 mins walk away, I may never see him :rotfl:

On the booze front, I am stopping drinking from 2 January until Easter - that may be too long for you, but I'd be happy for the company if you are stopping mid week. Sounds like a few people will stop on Monday through Thursday- maybe any money normally spent on booze could be OPd, didn't think of that before.

    Best wishes Tilly x

Just butting in to say I love the idea of giving up booze from Jan to Easter Tilly, I might steal that idea for myself. Not only is it a healthy thing to do, but any money saved can be OP'd as you say. Thanks for sharing !

Easter is my birthday this year, so not the worst idea ever ;) That said, lord only knows what state I'd be on on my birthday :D
