I really love it when non smokers evangelate about the forthcoming smoking ban. "How fantastic," they cry, "that I will not be forced to inhale filthy, disgusting cigatette smoke when I choose to go to places that have traditionally been filled with such matter when instead I could quite easily go to one of the many non-smoking restaurants, cinemas, coffee shops, cafés or bowling alleys, or sit in the non-smoking area. Now I won't have to make the effort to research whether smoking will be permitted or not! So I can be lazy and just go wherever the hell I like and not worry about being smoked upon."
This legislation represents nothing more than the removal of freedom of personal choice from consumers by the government. It's not the subject matter that's important, it's the principle. The government only chose smoking in public areas because they know they can get away with it. The next thing they will ban will be slightly less controvertial, more people will moan, but nobody will have a leg to stand on because they have already assented to the principle that the government is well within its rights to remove freedoms from its minions.
Think about it: when is the last time you suffered from inhaling second hand smoke in a cinema or Starbucks? People don't like smoky cinemas or coffee shops, so the market doesn't provide them. In fact nowadays a pub is just about the only place you can have a cigarette. If people don't like smoky pubs, smoky pubs will disappear of their own accord, just like smoky cinemas and restaurants did. If you don't like smelling of smoke when you go to the pub, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!. OK there might not be a non-smoking pub near you, but just about every other kind of leisure provision facility in the country doesn't allow smoking - go there instead!
I stopped smoking in October and have never felt better for it. But I don't use the fact that I stopped to push quitting onto other people: it was a choice I made that was right for my particular circumstances at that particular time. By the logic of this Act, smoking will be banned in EVERY enclosed public space (except, bizarrly, on stage where it 'adds to the integrity of the performance'). Is it really right that if a group of smokers decide to start a smokers-only club they shouldn't be allowed to smoke in it?
By the way: the income generated from tobacco duty BY FAR EXCEEDS the cost to the NHS for treating smoking-related illnesses. Food for thought.

redmandarin wrote:And for giving us cancer? Roy Castle never smoked a day in his life but he died because he worked in clubs and bars, where he passively inhaled the cigarette smoke provided by all those kind and selfless smokers that he was unfortunate enough to come into contact with!
Smokers are knocked by others - for good reason - it's because smokers are in a minority now, approximately 25% of the adult population, depending which figures you read. This means that 75% of people choose to NOT smoke. Nor do they choose to breath in other people's second hand smoke. Smoking is not about smokers rights - so that they can continue helping to contaminate and kill people, it's about everyone else's right to be protected from those who are so selfish that don't appear to care about what they're doing to other human beings!
Well said dobbiesloan! Roll on July 1st, then at last the non-smoking majority can enjoy being restaurants, bars, pubs and other public places, without being choked by cigarette smoke that makes us cough, our eyes sore and makes our bodies and clothing stink, whilst breathing in carcinogenic poisons!
If smokers want to kill themselves - fine, but they do not have the right to do it to the rest of us - and free cigarettes are not going to help the situation!
in all fairness 2 of my family have died from cancer , both lung cancer. Neither of them smoked a single cigarette EVER , and one of them was only 19 , so no , cancer isnt all down to smokers...so get off your high horse , grow up , and shut up!James thinks worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but it doesn't get you anywhere
If i help you...Please thank me! :beer:0 -

:rotfl: Nice try! No we don't as a matter of fact! :rotfl: So you really hate people like me do you? You know nothing about me! I notice that you didn't even bother to try and defend your disgusting habit (but resorted to attacking me instead). The reason why you are unable to offer a defence is because you represent a position which is both morally and socially indefensible. You have already lost this argument - so there really is no need to get on the defensive, start making up rubbish - and launch into an attack on me for something that I don't do!0 -
So er hmm...these free fags...anyone got a light...er I`ll get me coat!!!!!!!!“When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” Socrates
