Mr_Vot wrote:Because you could sell the free fags to a smoker
I think you've put a tar-stained fingerright on it there Mr Vot. It's that word "free" - MSE'ers see that and it doesn't matter what follows, they'll just go for any old thing!
It's a bit of an addiction really I suppose...talking of which, back to smoking...0 -

The last figures I've seen concerning smoking vs the NHS (but this was a while ago so it wont be strictly accurate) - Smoker's contribute around £8 billion a year in tax on cigs/cigars/loose tobacco and it costs the NHS around £2 billion to treat smoking related illness... That's a huge defecit they'll have to find! I'm an ex-smoker so I can see both points, but really, what's wrong with a bloody smoking section in a restaraunt? Everyone's happy! The the poster who made a comment about Roy Castle, you gotta remember thousands of people each year die from cancer who have no exposure to tobacco smoke. Cancer one of those things... Smoking certainly doesn't help, but it is no way near the only cause of cancer. Any of you guys having a BBQ this summer? Thought about the toxins and fumes released there?...0

It would be interesting to see how much revenue the government get from tobacco products compared to how much it spends on smoking related illness. My guess is that if everyone packed in smoking the NHS would collapse through lack of funding!!!
Everyone moaning about smokers should thank us all for paying all that money in!
Last Government figures I heard were :-
£8 billion "donated" by smokers to the NHS through tax on cigarrettes (75-80% of cost of a packet)
£1 billion spent on smokers by NHS for specifically smoking related diseases (emphysema, etc)
Now, as an ex-smoker with a partner who still smokes, I would have someone smoking next to me than having buses, etc pushing out all the crap through the exhausts!:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

I had a call from them yesterday, but my panel number the lady had to enter wasn't showing a match. She tried to ring her supervisor but she wasn't available so she is going to get hold of her today and ring me back. She said she had two inetrviews to do today and then she'll call me back, so maybe they have started the trials in my area?
She sounded like a very nice lady and was really apologetic for hassling me, even though she wasn't! Hopefully they'll sort out my number and i'll have some free cigs this week0 -
Just before I call it a day, I would like to ask the "Smoking is a disgusting habit" brigade a quick question. Would they like their tax and National Insurance contribution doubled? If everyone gave up smoking the government would have to find this extra cash! 75% of the price of a packet of cigarrettes is tax!:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

The interviews have definitely begun. Researcher did the first interview today and left cigarettes. Won't say more because of confidentiality issues. Returning at weekend.0
