We joked about doing that for ages! I think my husband's quite miffed that I kept my name (I am still Ms Maidenname), but he was no more willing to change his to mine, so he couldn't really argue.

I can't begin to imagine how weird it would be to change one's name - I never even considered it!

Likewise. Hubby vetoed every suggestion I made for a new surname, so we both kept our own.

This makes no sense. Are you marrying your stepfather?

I haven't decided whether to change my name or not, so this is a very interesting thread!!! :D I won't feel any less 'married' if I keep my own name. Maybe I'll review the situation if/when we have a baby.

I certainly won't bother changing my name at work. It's VERY common for women to come back to work from honeymoon and find their new husband's surname on their office door and even their email address changed  - if this happens to me I shall be a bit cross and get them to change it back!

My passport doesn't expire until 2018 so all trips between now and then WILL be booked in my own name, whether I change it or not :rotfl:

Just to add - if I do change, OH has a very nice surname and it goes well with my first name. If he had an awful surname there is NO way I would change!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

When I got married for the second time, I kept my first married name (even though it was first husband's name, it was, coincidentally, my Mum's family name too before she got married). I kept it because I wanted to still have the same name as my son, I don't actually like husband's surname, I like mine, I didn't want to be the second Mrs G (especially as his first wife has the same first name as me!), and because I wanted to keep the same name at work. I work across a lot of different locations and people wouldn't have had a clue who I was.

ETA - MIL doesn't know I haven't changed my name (would upset/puzzle her) so she calls me Mrs G!

    Yikes - confusing! :rotfl:

I am going to miss my maiden name, as it took me soo long to get it back, it just means alot. I got adopted when I was four and could always remember my dad. My step-dad wasn't the nicest person and finally when I was 18 I was able to change my name back to my original name which is how it always should have been.
I now feel very protective of my name and am finding it very hard to think that I will be giving it up. I have discussed with the OH about him taking my name and he is just not having it and I feel an importance in having the same surname so I have reluctantly given in.
    I will miss it.

Aw! You shouldn't have to change it if you don't want to!

I'm in two minds about whether I'm looking forward to changing my name or not.

Am in teh same situation as lots of others in terms of work, so might keep my name for that.

My maiden name is unusal and goes really well with my first name (again not common). Also, my dad passed away last year and I feel sad to be losing something he gave me (if that makes any sense).

My new name is more common - though still not common place and everyone says with my 1st name it will sound very posh. But I think my main issue with being Mrs H**** is that not only was his ex the 1st Mrs H****, but she still uses that name. :(

Same here - I want to keep my family (i.e. my dad's) surname, especially as he is no longer with us.

    Good point! :rotfl:
I do miss my maiden name! Everyone said that it had a nice ring to it and even sounded like a showbiz name. My new (well, 3 years old now) surname isn't that uncommon, especially in Scotland/Ireland, but people have trouble spelling and pronouncing it - even moreso than my maiden name which was French in origin.

What I did do when I got married was keep my maiden surname, but as one of my middle names and have told hubby that any future children will follow suit, so will have my maiden name as one of their middle names and we will all share the same surname. I think that's a nice compromise :)

That is a lovely idea! :)

Oh btw, I hate the term 'maiden name' - am I the only one?? It's MY name! :rotfl:

I'm looking forward to taking H2B surname & I can't wait to change it all at work:D My work mates said it's going to confuse them looking for a different email but they will get used to it. I don't have a professional career so don't have any problems with changing it. I've got about 8 years left on my passport but I'm going to change it , not very MSE I know:o

Not just you - I almost typed 'birth name' then thought that sounded weird too.

Strangely, no one at work even asked if I was planning to change my name - I must give off that vibe :rotfl:

  • I can't wait to be married but am not keen on changing my name. There's not many around with my surname and H2B's name is quite common!!

Also as I'm a teacher it will be so wierd being called by a new name! But it would be too confusing for me to keep it just for work, plus the kids have already been asking what my new name will be :)

And I never even considered that my signature would change!! I spent ages as a teen (sad!) messing around to get a funky one and even now I get comments on it... will have to have some more experiments :p
  • I'm not sure what to do yet. when I had my daughter I had her registered with her dads surname but a year after he stopped coming to see her I changed it by deed pole to my surname and if I change my surname to my OH she will be the only one left. I don't have a relationship with my dad so would not be bothered about losing it except for the fact that she will be the one and only in our family.

I was talking to my mum and nana about this and they suggested double barreling my name but I personally think it sounds rather poo. My surname is rather common but OH is not and I like the idea of changing it to his but like I said I'm undecided. I have been practicing a new signature but have not found one I either like or can do the same twice. I have 17 months to decide and may just leave it and decide on the spot when I have to.
