Any brides changing their name going to miss their Maiden name?

Although I am really looking forward to taking my H2B name I am really going to miss my Maiden name :( I mean I have been called it for 32 years!

I mean I am looking forward to being a Mrs as we will be be a family so I will now share my husbands ans stepsons name.

But his surname is a bit of a mouthful for me and I have found I now need to spell it out to people. :o

I've spent the past 11 years building up my career and I have built a good name for myself within my industry which is vital for career progression. Would it be bad to keep my maiden name for work?

Also my Mum has re-married so now my mum, brother and I will all have different surnames.

Maybe I am being a bit sentimental but I feel I am giving up some of my independance. Since we moved in together now all our bills come in his name (Grrr:mad:) not our decision but our utility companies as it is normal to have the mans name! This really winds me up as I pay all our bills he has never but that has been our decision as I run the house.

I guess I just needed a rant as I can't wait to be Mrs! I was just wondering if I was the only one?

First time round I couldn't wait to change my name! My maiden name was quite unusual and I always had to spell it out, then I had a really common easy to manage married name which also went nicely with my first name. When I got married this time round I was changing to a slightly less common name and am back to making sure it's spelt right (not difficult but just a couple of possibles). It also meant I'd move away from my kids names as they obviously have my first married surname. But I totally get where you're coming from at work - I'd had my first married name in the same job for over 20 years and loads of people knew it. If that had been my maiden name I would have kept it for work, but in my case it just feels wrong to use first husband's name when I now have a nice new hubby!
A lot of people keep their work in maiden name and several say they feel it gives them a work and personal identity and they like keeping the two separate. Only drawback is when you do business travel and have to make sure that if somebody else makes travel arrangements for you, they realise what name your passport is in!
  • My surname now is quite unusual, always has to be spelt out and very nearly rhymes with my first name which is annoying. My new surname will rhyme even MORE with my first name though  I thought it would be easier to spell, but no, my OH assures me everyone gets it wrong and it will need spelling out also.

Oh well, seeing as I'm used to it already I don't mind :D

Yes MrsDrink I am a bit freaked out by that too.

I am also considering keeping my name at work. Or until I get a new job at least. Think it's quite common.

I think it is quite a popular thing to maintain your maiden name for professional purposes. My friend is a barrister, and as you say, had built her career over many years so she kept her maiden name at work and uses her married name for everything else.

It's going to be really weird having another surname, almost like a new start :D Quite looking forward to it though.
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???

When I got married for the second time, I kept my first married name (even though it was first husband's name, it was, coincidentally, my Mum's family name too before she got married). I kept it because I wanted to still have the same name as my son, I don't actually like husband's surname, I like mine, I didn't want to be the second Mrs G (especially as his first wife has the same first name as me!), and because I wanted to keep the same name at work. I work across a lot of different locations and people wouldn't have had a clue who I was.

ETA - MIL doesn't know I haven't changed my name (would upset/puzzle her) so she calls me Mrs G!

  • I am going to miss my maiden name, as it took me soo long to get it back, it just means alot. I got adopted when I was four and could always remember my dad. My step-dad wasn't the nicest person and finally when I was 18 I was able to change my name back to my original name which is how it always should have been.
I now feel very protective of my name and am finding it very hard to think that I will be giving it up. I have discussed with the OH about him taking my name and he is just not having it and I feel an importance in having the same surname so I have reluctantly given in.
    I will miss it.

I think you'd be foolish not to keep your name, even if it's only for work. You could lose out on appointments if people don't realise who you are.

This must be because you haven't told them what you want. We have some of the utilities in his name and some in mine. It's very useful when companies want a recent utility bill as proof of your address.

I guess I just needed a rant as I can't wait to be Mrs! I was just wondering if I was the only one?

One of my young relatives has kept her name but uses Mrs as her honorific.
