fleas - what is stronger than Advantage & can I buy it online?

Advantage is no longer working a full month on one of my cats (typically the one with a flea allergy)

what now?

  • Have you tried Advocate, we have been using that successfully since frontline stopped working, you can get that from the chemist as well as the vets (don't know about online we still tend to buy from the vets), although you need to know how much your puss weighs.

I changed from Advantage to Frontline, but now just changed back to Advantage again. The Frontline still seemed to be working, but as I know the treatments do lose effectiveness after a long period of use, I thought it best to change before that happened. Advantage now do a treatment for large cats, which mine is, so I decided to give it a go.

I got it through a different online pet pharmacy than the one I'd been using as it was the cheapest I could find. Delivery free & fast. https://www.animeddirect.co.uk if you are interested.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I buy Advantage and Program from Animed. Program is a liquid you put in the food every month and it renders any fleas that DO bite, infertile. It's safe to use with a spot-on treatment and gives another line of defence in the war with the dratted fleas!
If your cat weighs more than 4kg, you can use the big cat version of Advantage - the normal stuff never worked on my big Maine Coons as a the dosage was insuffucient.

    Hmm

I don't really like the sound of putting flea killer in the furbabies food! They are fed really pure stuff & the suggestion sounds a bit like going in another direction.

I already was using `fatter cat' sized Advantage.

I think I will ask vet for a prescription - generally it is not moneysaving 2 buy meds from the vet however - hence the comment about buying online. Frontline no longer works on them either.

    All new suggestions welcome.

Using Program was an act of desperation! Tig has a terrible flea allergy and auto-immune problems which often require steroid treatment. Program has been around for a long time and Tig hasn't had any adverse reaction....and is bump/lump-free this month :).

I just have nothing to lose going down this route PLUS if it works I imagine any flea treatment will be okay to use alongside it & the fleas will not bite me too (especially annoying `feature' I have noticed this month since I had heating on around the clock because of the cold weather, flu etc)!
  • How about Gold Label Get Rid? It's marketed for Horses, but safe to use on cats, dogs and chickens. Someone else on this forum recommended this on another thread. I must admit I haven't tried it yet (luckily, my cats are flea free at the moment and the frontline is working) but I intend to. .

Animed is out of stock of the Program & after using this am very keen to continue as a continual round of spraying/boiling flat contents is not something I want to consider & every time I take something that has been `put away for storage eg seasonally' I would prefer not to wonder if some eggs are being disturbed to hatch & start up flea cycle indoors!

What I don't understand is why this stuff isn't marketted wholesale as it's much easier/less hassle to treat the cat than the flat!
