    Hi
if you use the search function, you find plenty of smoothie recipes.
But making smoothie is really simple, just put any fruit you like with some ice cubes and sugar to taste and blend. You may also use forzen fruit or add yogurt and milk or water. With the time you'll become an expert.

    Hi Emily,

We have a thread with lots of smoothie recipes that should help so I've added your thread into that one to keep all the suggestions together.

  • I have recently bought a blender and being making smoothies with the stepDs.

I usually make them with 1-2 bannanas, 1-2 oranges, various (frozen) berries maybe kiwi etc and then make it a bit thinner with orange juice or water.

But they don't seem to keep very well in the fridge? They seem to separate out and then don't taste so good when mixed back together. This was even worse when we made some with yoghurt in.

I know that you are supposed to eat them freshly made, but surely it should be ok to make it the night before for breakfast?

Thats because they don't contain emulsifiers like alot of store bought ones do. Same with salad dressings, any dressing that is nicely distributed with even bits all the way through is packed with unecessary gubbins.
The acid in the oranges is probably slightly curdling the yoghurt as well which won't help much

Maybe you could try making them without the water/oj/yoghurt, keeping the fruit puree tightly sealed in the fridge overnight and mixing the liquids back in just before you want to drink them? I've always found that the more fruit I put in a smoothie the longer it can sit without separating.

Even shop bought ones seperate out - you just don't notice as it's in a carton (and why they tell you to shake it first).
As for the taste - I'm not sure about that - is the smoothie kept in an airtight container? - as it could be air making the fruit go off (goes off a lot quicker when blended than it would as whole fruit)

    hi

just the other day i noticed this with a smoothis i made with raspberries strawberries yoghurt and milk and the conclusion i came to was that it was the water content of the fruit which didn't mix too well with the dairy. i think sometimes the ones you buy have pressed the fruit (ie squeezed out much of the watery juice) so there is not so much water.

great idea posted by gingernutmeg about blending the fruit and just adding the yoghurt etc when you are about to drink it.

I honestly think your best plan is to make them fresh each morning. If you are just making for one it isn't a moment's work with a blender.

Hi! I think the issue about eating them fresh isn't about safety - I'm sure they'll be safe to eat within 24 or even 48 hours.

I expect that the issue is with the nutrition. The *goodness* from fruit and veg starts to deteriorate as soon as they are prepared. Fruit prepapred one day, will, by the next, have lost a lot of the vitamin content.

I agree with thriftlady - they're no trouble to make freshly every morning.
