as the above title asks. and where do people come up with the names such as,shorkies, chorkies, daxi jacks and these othe cross pedigree names.i always thought any cross bred dog as a mongrel and i certainly wouldn't pay up to £600 for a cross bred dog.are these eventually going to be recognised as pedigrees by the kennel club?

Until they are recognised by the KC of GB they are indeed just mongrels and anyone paying more then a token payment for one needs their head felt0

As suki says, they are just crossbreeds & people only charge that amount because they can! If people wouldn't pay hundreds for crossbreeds with no health testing the prices would soon drop. As to why anyone'd pay a fortune on a cross from a 'breeder' that probably hasn't health tested the parents or bred to improve the breed etc I have no idea. Probably just because they want to brag about their designer dog.0

Good breeders charge a lot for their pups because it has cost them a lot to get a litter! Selecting and choosing a sire, health checks, additional foods, worming, etc for the b1tch, and vet checks and often first innoculations of the pups, etc etc etc. Most good breeders make little profit that can be wiped out in one swipe if there are problems with the birth, or very small litters.
Idiots who breed mongrels with fancy names rarely do any health checks, etc and are jumping on the bandwagon of this new fad. It's a bit like calling shelf stackers 'stock replenishment officers' - if it's got a fancy title it must be good.
Marketing is a dangerous tool!0 -

And you're right.
But a long as there are stupid people out there willing to pay silly amounts for mongrels this trend will continue.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

They're just mutts.
Well, I think they're dogs, and I think every dog is worth the same essentially. Its just as stupid to pay a grand for an inbred, non health tested, poorly cared for pedigree puppy as it is to pay a grand for a 'designer' crossbreed.
In my opinion, its worth paying for a puppy from healthy parents that's been carefully reared in a loving breeder's home, regardless of its 'breed' and not worth paying for a carelessly bred puppy with an unknown health background. They're all the same species after all!
Of course, I prefer to rescue anyway.0 -

Technically, I think a crossbreed is when you know what the two purebred parents were, a mongrel is a mix of more than two.0 -
i only came across all these different names of these crossbreeds/mongrels when searching for a miniature smooth haired dachshund pup,it's easier finding hens teeth than finding someone who is selling mini daxis in scotland!!!0

I do agree with all of this. Maybe the message should be - if you want a dog that looks a certain way, and is a certain size then you should ensure that you check the breeder out very carefully. If you want a mongrel, dont pay shedloads of money for something with a fancy name, because you're paying for the name, not the dog!0 -
Totally agree with you - I asked a similar question a few weeks ago:

Again, I only came across it when looking for a dog - I couldn't believe it either.
There's some other silly examples that people have come across in my thread.
I would expect people to pay a fair price at a breeder to ensure health checks have been done, the pups/parents have been looked after medically and fed properly.
I too don't think there's anything wrong with a mongrel (and would happily have one) but this ridiculous trend of coming up with stupid names and charging a fortune makes me angry - some of that anger is also directed at the people who buy them & pay such ridiculous sums of money as they're fuelling the trend ......Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
