why is it that pedigree pups are so expensive?

I have to say, I have noticed a bit of a change in the direction of 'dog snobbery' recently. You hear a lot of mongrel or crossbreed owners being quite snitty about purebreds as if owning a mongrel is somehow morally superior, calling them 'mutants' 'disfigured', and from this thread 'grotesquely ugly monstrosities'!0

I'm glad im not the only one who finds it annoying when they make these daft names up for a crossbreed
I use the word mongrel as endearment as well, to the poster who is getting all silly over the word you should really chill, its a word that been around a long time to desbribe a canine
A collegue of mine paid £600 for a poodle x labrador ... I just laughed at her. Silly, silly people!Ant. :cool:0 -

Poodle/lab crosses were one of the first of the 'designer' breeds and were originally intended to be working dogs. There are responsible breeders out there for this cross!
Why is it any more silly than paying £600 for a pedigree lab or a poodle? Laughing at your friend wasn't very nice was it?0 -

Nobody has got all anything over the word mongrel, I believe the word 'just' was what bothered her.0 -

The word I was questioning (not 'getting all silly' over) is 'just' not 'mongrel' or 'mutt'.
Re the 'daft' names for crossbreeds - I don't have a problem with them. All dogs are the product of cross breeding at some point in their genetic line. It doesn't make them a breed and it doesn't make them worth anything extra, but it's just a description, that's all.
It's just a word to describe a canine. You should really chill.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

You can't have it both ways - either you don't like me calling a crossbred dog a mutt or you don't like me calling a dog with extreme genetic mutations a mutant. I can't be being snobby towards both at the same time.
A mutt is a casual name for a dog. Like moggie is a casual name for a cat. They both have specific roots to the words, but it doesn't really matter in the great scheme of things.
One of the cats is theoretically a Maine Coon. The reason why I type MC is because The Tortoiseshell With A Fluffy Arz Like A Pair Of Pantaloons, Furry Toes And Lynx Tipped Ears But Doesn't Have Papers Because I Took Her To Stop Her Being Dangled Off A 3rd Floor Balcony By The Bogbrush Tail By A 5 Year Old With Issues But I Don't Have Her Papers Because I Wasn't Going To Hang Around In Case The Owner Changed Her Mind When She Remembered How Much The Cat Was Worth Unspayed And Is Thick As A Barn Door just takes too darn long to type every time.
Mutant is being taken as an insult to owners' social class when it's more of an insult to the poor bloody animals forced into being. There is no point and IMO, is ethically wrong, to create creatures that have no business being on the planet - the types that have their brains trying to explode from their heads, that have to be delivered by section, that go psychotic for no apparent reason, for example. All dogs (and domesticated animals as a whole) are mutants. I use it in the context of the ones I have just described. Whether that unfortunate mutant has been created to meet an artificial breed standard or because the name sounds funny is irrelevant.
Whatever. There's snobbery about whether someone was good enough to buy their animal from a rescue or not. There's snobbery about how much the creature cost. There's snobbery about whether a dog is a chav animal of choice or not, whether one well known trainer is good or not (and that changes depending upon the latest training fad - as the ex MIL, who is a professional trainer and behaviourist will tell anyone at great length, as she can chart the developments in dog training fashion over the last 50 years at least). There's snobbery about what food they are fed, whether they were rehomed due to illness/death or maltreated - the list is endless.............
There's always someone going to take offence at something or another.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I think mutt is fine, as is mongrel or any other word people want to use. I also agree about the mutant comment now I understand it. I feel the same about any dog that is bred to have a particular characteristic that has severe health problems associated with it, including pedigree dogs.
I also agree about dog snobbery. I don't like the 'it must be a rescue' drum beating that goes on any more than I like the 'just a mutt' vs 'pure' snobbery. The training - it seems that positive reinforcement is kind and it works so I'm not interested in anything heavy handed but it's like parenting - I dont' care how other people are doing it as long as they're not damaging their dog (or child) or causing their animal (or child) to become a nuisance or danger to others.Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

Brilliant! You have such a way with words, Jojo :rotfl:
(I'll bow out of the discussion now, what with being a cat person and all, with three moggies and two pedigrees, all of whom I love dearly and equally)
