Unfortunately for the most they dont. Most of these so called designer breeds are 'my mate's got one of these, let's call it a (insert cutesy fancy name) and make a bomb'. There's no forethought except money making. As far as the gene pool goes, again, sensible breeders check the background of both parents, but if you think about it, years ago the mongrel gene pool was often dominated by the neighbourhood rogue who roamed his area!

I was talking in principle more than the realities, I do agree that there is a shortage of responsible breeders of crosses (in fact, there are far too many terrible breeders of pedigrees too!) but all things being equal I don't think one is morally or in any other way superior to the other.

Breeding from closed gene pools is a path to disaster no matter how much you health test, it won't keep those breeds healthy forever, even the ones that are relatively so now. I'm all in favour of sensible outcrossing.

Zara is a long haired GS with no papers - that makes her a mutt, simples.

    She's a lovely mutt though :D

Because people pay the the stupid prices!!!!

I met someone the other day who's paid £1200 for a pug puppy. I don't see why that's less insane than paying it for a 'jug' or a 'puggle'!

Feeding her on the wrong stuff then. Oakley burps like a contented sheik, but the other end remains noise and smell free! :rotfl:

Orijen all the way - theoretically.

In real life - whatever cat food is left in 4 dishes as desert....unless I am fast enough to move it ;)

Its shocking the price of some pups especially when you think some breeds (including my own dog) have such a long list of hereditary diseases and health problems!

We knew they were a 'high maintenance' breed and were expecting more vet bills than your average dog but I wonder how many owners of pedigrees realise this before buying their pups.Sadly this is why so many lovely dogs end up in rescue.

I hate this 'just a mutt' nonsense. Sorry. No dog deserves to be 'just', regardless of its parentage.

Dogs have either come from a good breeder or they haven't. Either they've had relevant health checks done on them or they haven't. Either they've been bred from parents with good temperaments or they haven't.

This is all down to the BREEDER, not the dog.

And either people pay over the odds for a dog or they don't, regardless whether it's a so call 'pure' dog or a mix.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

I've got ADHD. You can ask me about it but I may not remember to answer...

I think gettingready's reference to a 'mutt' was said with a sense of endearment. I think you're getting a little touchy about something that was said in fun - yes of course all dogs are special, nobody would dispute that, and I think your reference to the breeder is repeating in different words what others have already said.

However, the OP's original point was more to do with so-called designer dogs and the amount that people charge for them, not the real worth of a dog, be it cross-breed or pedigree as long as your arm, etc. It's just another set of chavs trying to make a fast buck.
