Smoking around kids .... how bad??

Apparently it's the fumes from the cigarettes that can't be smelt that are more dangerous and there are numerous studies now that show the effects of smoking on the families of smokers, even if they never smoke in the house. Possibly the saddest is the SIDS one where the mother being a smoker was shown to increase the risk of SIDS, especially when sharing a bed. study articleEat food. Not too much. Ok, apologies where apologies are due. I guess that i am lucky that i don't have an 'addictive' personality. It gives me very little empathy in this area.
My point about smoking around children still stands. If you realise it's addictive and not that great, why subject children to it aswell? Now, that can surely be agreed upon as being foolish?
The whole leagility thing get's my goat too. Drugs as destructive as nicotine and alcohol are 'fine' because they are controlled and taxed. Drugs that they can't controll the stream of are immediatley 'illegal' and thus 'bad'.
I so totally agree there! I KNOW my nicotine addiction is bad! thats why I dont subject anyone else to it! even second or third hand!
the legality of nicotine and alcohol addiction is more to do with the tax on them which earns the country 'megabucks'! Government wont make them illegal because it earns them so much money - besides which - most people enjoy alcohol responsibly - why punish the few who dont? most people with a tobacco addiction also behave responsibly now. why punish them?
tbh - on that reasoning the government should really make drugs such as heroin and marijuana legal - they are not more harmful than alcohol and tobacco respectively. just think how much lovely tax money they would get! besides freeing up the police to investigate actual crimes!0 -
Whats worse is when you see people smoking with kids in their cars! The opposite of what you know...is also true0

I'm a smoker and I would like to point out that it not we all don't give a monkeys some of us bother about others
I don't smoke around children, I keep well away from them,
I have a room in my home that i smoke in, which is always with windows open, furnishings regularly washed, and i don't invite guests to that room, rather we go to the kitchen and sit around the table in there.charlieann wrote: »In a food preparation area?

I didn't say i smoked in the kitchen.0 -
In kitchen back door is open, dining room patio door is open. Night time living room door closed. Can't see how the smoke can go anywhere near the kids. Think the media has scared many people by saying even the smell of it can cause cancer.Want to read that again...
I didn't say i smoked in the kitchen.
But Darly did. I think that is the post they're replying to.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
We smoke. But we smoke in dining room or kitchen when kids are up/home. When they are out/in bed we relax in living room and smoke. But never around them. They also know not to come in kitchen when we are smoking.
Sorry but I agree with meritaten.
If you are smoking in the house at all you are subjecting your children to second hand smoke. It hangs around for hours that stuff, not to mention the smell which is invading and clinging to three of your main rooms.
I once heard someone say that smoking and non smoking areas were like having urinating and non urinating areas in a swimming pool.....
We spent years getting MIL to stop smoking round the children. We thought she had until one day OH popped back to her house to get something he had forgotten and found her smoking on the kitchen with DS in the living room. She could never understand that just because she was in a different room, that didn't make it okay. She could never smell it either, we used to have to shower and wash all our clothes after visiting, and that was with no one smoking while we were there.
OP, I hope your ex supports you in this situation. All I can say is make sure you keep calm/pleasant, and as someone said use phrases like 'how can WE make sure DD is okay' etc.

I wouldn't let my child be around anyone who smoked and I don't think any court would force you to put your child in a position where they were going to be exposed to passive smoking. If they did, it's be on TV before the Simpsons.0

Erm -two different things there
People who smoke
People who smoke around children
It's entirely possible to be both-however if you genuinely can't understand the difference I shall eagerly await the court case when you take your child's teacher to court for daring to have a fag after working hours.
I find this anti-smoking hysteria a bit tiresome. I don't have a problem with *most* smokers as most smoke considerately -I do have problems with
1 People who are sanctimonious about smoking
2 People who are happy to let their kids see them drinking (which frankly causes far more health and social problems than smoking)
3 Hypocrites who do both
As for the OP it's a difficult situation as you clearly see and yes you can ask but can't dictate what goes on during access visits..
I do understand that -the fact she's quite dominent, it's her house etc. I'd still discuss it in a non confrontational way though-your ex might even appreciate the support and together you can work out ways to at the very least minimize the exposure to smoke (more days out doing things just the two of them etc). I'm sure sooner or later someone WILL try to block access in the courts due to the fact a parent smokes however.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Trouble is, OP, you are the parent and so is your ex. Once your child is with your ex you cant tell him who he can and cant see or invite into his own home.
It is not illegal to smoke in ones own home even if children live there so there is nothing you can do about it except perhaps tell him you prefer it didnt happen.0 -
