Smoking around kids .... how bad??

I was told by the nurse when my DD was born, that after a fag I shouldn't be around her for half an hour, because for that long afterwards I would be breathing toxic fumes on her.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Will probably make some people angry by posting this but I strongly believe that people who smoke shouldn't have children. It is, as you say, the same as other addictions, and nobody sane would dream of having a child whilst addicted to cocaine or any other drug.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

"Are you going to sterilise them before they have kids, or make them abort, or take away their kids? What's the plan."
Well I certainly think it's tantamount to child abuse, especially if the parent is smoking whilst pregnant. I appreciate it can be hard to give up something you're addicted to but that should be a preparation made before having a child, the same as analysing your financial/relationship stability... (but that's a whole other issue!)0 -

I would love it if this happened but I think in reality not that many people even analyse their finances (it will seem higher to people on here as we're all more astute ;-) ) and many people use a baby to try a fix a relationshipI seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be0 -

This article explains some of the risks of "third-hand" smoke:

How come we can't spank a child yet we are allowed to give them cancer?0

UPDATE ...
I went about it very tactfully and he said .... they've split up and he's staying at his Mum's so it won't be an issue anymore. That he hated her smoking and went on about it all the time to her but it fell on deaf ears. So I gave it the full works and told him just how bad I think it is etc.
They've split up and got back together before, but if they do again this time at least I've said it all now and can stick to it. Also, as DD is staying at his Mum's with him I can't see any reason why this couldn't continue if they do reconcile and won't still insists on smoking in the house.
Thanks to everyone for the help and support!I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be0 -

"But you didn't answer the question...." @Lotus-eater... Sadly I don't have the power to do either, but would love to take all kids away that are not being fairly treated! Very idealistic I know...
"I would love it if this happened but I think in reality not that many people even analyse their finances (it will seem higher to people on here as we're all more astute ;-) ) and many people use a baby to try a fix a relationship" @FattyBettyBoo, I totally agree with you and it's very sad, but I do recognise that that's unfortunately the world we live in. Thank goodness for places like this to help people make more informed decisions!!0
