Morning all. I've been MIA again I'm afraid:o now catching up on the news. Congratulations on the job front Hoglet. A change is as good as a rest.
MrsLW - grrrr for Nell. I've soooo been there. Several times I was more or less begged to apply for promotions only to be unsuccessful and told there was a "marginally better candidate on the day". Every one of the "better" candidates ended up struggling and me having to bail them out until the penny finally dropped that there was no way I would ever get promotion as I was far too useful where I was and being well underpaid for what I was doing. Literally overnight I reduced what I did to a point where I did pretty much the same as my peers. I was careful to make sure nobody could find fault with my work but my employers got exactly what they paid me for. It caused huge shock waves but next time round I got the promotion and a significant pay rise. Without sounding militant I do things to suit me now. Whilst the company get plenty from me it's on my terms and my self and family are my absolute priority. Nell will feel so much better in herself once she has drawn some boundaries - I know I did!
Working from home today (partly cos it suits me!) so although I was at the laptop before 8 I also have a nice big washing on the line and I'm having a break right now. Looking forward to Easter next week and a nice long weekend. Will be busy though, hosting a family dinner on Good Friday and mother and I are joining my aunt and cousin for afternoon tea on Easter Saturday which I'm looking forward to.
Gardening season well underway now. The grass has been mown several times and Sunday saw lots of pruning activity. Hubby thinks we may plant some veg seeds and potatoes this weekend although I still think it's a little early and could still be frosty. Will see what temperatures this week brings and decide nearer the end of the week. I have most of my seeds although missing beetroot, celery and romaine lettuce so will need to pick them up. I've also decided that I will order 2 Macintosh Red Apple trees for delivery at the end of this year. I know they aren't native to the UK but they are my favourite and difficult to find here so why not plant my own?! I've bookmarked the website and orders will open in May so I have a reminder on the calendar and will be waiting to place mine.
I see my washing has wrapped itself around the line so I'm off to retrieve it!0 -
Thanks SM it's a sorry state of affairs when you're so useful picking up the slack from everyone else and doing the parts of their jobs that they can't be bothered with that you are passed over for advancement isn't it? The staff room has been known to contain those staff who say 'why should I do things at the weekends/in the evenings/in time I'm not teaching, let those who don't have children do it because they don't have the commitments that we do!'!!! I feel that they will be the ones who feel Nells withdrawal the most as it might mean that they actually will be forced to do the job on their job description that they are paid to do, not just cherry pick the bits of it they like best. There will be a new Head in September and there will be changes inevitably and people will rail against them and protest because things have been slack for a few years now and perhaps a new hand on the helm will make changes to the benefit of folks like Nell, we'll see but in the meantime I hope very much that she will be better placed, less stretched and stressed and begin to regain her health, anything else will be a bonus!0

Here's another one cheering for Nell. However, hearing about the sort of person she is it's not going to be easy for her. I do hope that she never, ever apologises for not stepping into the breach. "Never complain, never explain," has a lot to commend it.
As for other teachers wanting special privileges because they have children, PSHAW! I've seen this word used in various old fashioned books and have always wanted an excuse to use it. Anyway, I recall a teacher I came across once who waxed lyrical about the fact that he should be paid more than single teachers because he had three children to support. We never did manage to convince him that he was being paid for the job he did, not for his commitments at home.
SM, When I was a gal it was always said that potatoes should be planted on Good Friday. Mind you that was in the soft south. It may be different up aloft. When I started gardening on my own account this was so ingrained in me that the first potatoes that I ever planted were, indeed, planted on Good Friday. In the middle of a snowstorm. After that I decided that the flames of hell would not devour me if I deviated to the tune of a day or two.

WellYou only went and did it eh? Well done you, absolutely fantastic. I'm proud of you! (if a young'un can be proud of an older person. Is that possible?)
All ok here. I've had the owner of the fire installers out as the plaster work has blown in places. He's been very apologietic and going to get another team out to rectify the issue. He's investigated and found that the plasterer of the team didn't do the plastering, instead left it to the Hetas engineer 'as he's got to learn sometime' Trust it to be on my watch. Anyway, no stress, a lovely company to deal with and it's going to be fixed ASAP. The walls were never finished anyway. Still, it kept me awake last night. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz now.
We've had lovely weather for the past few days. I have used my line in my little back yard. I love it. I feel like a little miners wife when I'm hanging it. Our yard is just as it was aside from the outhouse isn't there any more. I will have it looking smashing with pots eventually. I have nearly dug around half way of my front lawn and borders. My neighbour has given me 2 round box plants that have outgrown their pot so I've planted them. My freckles have crept out during my school walks. I've a definate spring in my step at the moment but I think that's helped with our walk along the bridal way consisting of baby lambs.
Sorry to read of your migranes Lyn. I suspect you've been a little worried about your girl of late too. Take care.
Monna you rebel youI hadn't heard about planting potatoes on Good Friday. What's the wisdom behind it do you know?
Love to allx

Thanks FUDS, I'm proud that you're proud of me!!! I'll keep doing what we've been doing and I WILL get there, it's silly how the loss slows the more you take off but it's OK and I know how to now!
Glad you've got a solution to the plaster problem and baby lambs on the bridleways, heavenly!
I've just come off the phone to Nell and the head wouldn't accept her letter today, he thinks she's acting in heat and might regret her decisions to give up areas of outdoor activities etc. so he said think on it over the holidays and if you're still of the same mind on the first day of next term, I'll accept your letter and we'll sort it out, so that's what she'll do. It will be the same letter and she won't change her mind so the outcome will be the same, just a couple of weeks later. She's Ok and actually has an evening tonight where all she needs to do is take her shower and then she's going to read her book, luxury stuff, I can't remember her having a whole evening off in literally years!!!
I've just had a text from Nell who has just been reading the thread and she's asked me to say 'Thank you' to all of you, you have genuinely brightened her day with your wonderfully supportive comments! It actually made her smile and as she says ' she's now scared her face is cracking as it's been so long!' so THANKS GUYS you've made MY baby happy, bless you all xxx.0 -
I remember reading the reason potatoes were planted on Good Friday was that it was the only day miners and others workers got off work. Not sure how accurate the info actually is.
Monna
Not happy the head said to wait with the letter and he would "sort it out". He is obviously hoping there will be no written record of shabby treatment and that he can talk her out of her decision. More power to Nell's elbow.
Two of my daughters have had similar experiences although not in teaching and ended up moving to another place where they were appreciated for their efforts.
I got an e mail saying rose bushes and perrenials had been despatched so the gardener came round to sort out the raised bed in the back garden. She found bricks, rubble, rubbish bits of lining and pebbles so it took longer than we thought but will be worth it in the end. She comes back on Thursday as I will be away part of next week and want to get as much done as possible
before then.
I am also getting someone to call round and advise me on getting fitted wardrobes or storage etc on at least one wall of the upstairs right bedroom to make better use of space and make it look more finished.

Good afternoon all,
It was very overcast this morning, but is now brighter.
We went off to B&Q this morning (pensioners day). Himself is replacing the stretchers on the garden bench and needed more wood. He and DDs bought the bench for my birthday many years ago. It is mainly cast iron with a wooden seat. I bought 2 garden chairs and a small bistro table to go on my new patio:)
Himself is annoyed because he can't work as quickly as he always did. I try to encourage him and keep him supplied with both hot and cold drinks.
Lyn I hope you are feeling better now, and I am sorry they wouldn't accept Nell's letter. I suppose they think she will change her mind over the Easter holiday, but I feel they are putting off the inevitable. It sounds to me as though Nell has been really hurt and has made up her mind, and perhaps they will then realise they have treated her very badly.
Fuddle, summer must be on it's way if you have freckles:) I am sure your back garden will look lovely with pots of annuals, my favourite are nastursums(sp) but Himself doesn't like them. They just remind me of when I was a child and a packet of seeds go quite a long way.
I hope everyone is reasonably well and enjoying the good weather, would be nice if it lasts over Easter.
Much love to all

Hi CANDLELIGHT I'm feeling fine today thank you, I suffered migraines quite often when I was younger but less so as I've aged, don't know what the trigger was yesterday but hopefully it was just a one off!
Beautiful day here again today, slightly cooler and breezier than it was yesterday but very pleasant out there. Walking Cookie was a real pleasure.
Just had a visit from my doggie walking friend Sue, she has a buyer for the house as of this morning and is now having just a tiny wobble as the move has become a reality and not something that 'we'll do one day', she'll be fine but just needed a cuddle and a chat. We're walking the hounds tomorrow so I'll settle her down then, I'm so very pleased for her and her hubs but I will miss her very much!
Nasturtiums are so easy to grow and the flowers as well as the leaves are peppery delicious in salads and even the green little seeds they produce can be pickled and used instead of capers, they more than earn their keep in any garden and you can grow them in pots, hanging baskets and any tiny bit of ground, even at the foot of a fence where they will climb up it and cover it with blooms and vines, wonderful things. The only downside is they are prone to blackfly!
Ruthie sent us the most gorgeous picture of young Orley today, his little face wreathed in delight .....and quantities of carrot, apple and parsnip puree!!! such a look of happiness. Mummy says he's a boy who likes his food!!! xxx.0 -
Weigh in this morning very frustrating. I am point 1 of a kilo away from BMI 25!!! Will be there by next week I hope!!!0
