  • Hello! Nell and I popped into town this morning for a stretch of legs and a look at the sales, had a fab time trying on clothes and trying on clothes in 'normal' shops which all fitted more to the point, what a fab feeling it was and the first time in years. Having said that I bought nothing BUT Nell bought me a lovely fair isle jumper which I LOVE!!! This afternoon I'm off to the Carol Service in the Cathedral, Nell left just after 1 o clock for the rehearsal and I'm getting there for quarter to 3 for a 3 o clock start. It will be a very nice way to end the Christmas celebrations. We're off home tomorrow after an early lunch as Nell has some A level planning to do and various other bits of work to plough her way through so that only seems fair. He Who Knows will be very relieved to get back to 'his' patch and routine, he's been very good though for someone who is NOT a naturally social personality and likes to potter for most of his day. He's just going to take himself off for a walk, he gets stiff sitting for too long, off to B & Q to look at 'man things'! Looking forward to supper this evening which will be our Bubble and Squeak with cold meats and pickles followed by Christmas cake for them and some fruit for me, yummy!!!

I hope you have all had, and are still having a nice Christmas and I for one am looking forward to getting back to normality tomorrow! Lyn xxx.
  • Hello all,

I hope you have all had a pleasant Christmas. Our's was lovely, but my goodness I was tired and had a bit of an upset tummy. Everything fine now, and back to my sensible eating. I know most of us give in at times to the food we shouldn't eat, but it actually makes me feel ill and it is never worth it.

We have so many boxes of choccies, and if you think we are both diabetic, so I think I will donate some to the box Tesco have at their entrance for the food bank.

I have my email account restored, so I am happy.

Lainey your mouth ulcers are probably because you are a little run down. I always suffered with them when I was younger, and it sounds as though you have had them in the past. They like to show themselves when you are at your lowest, and they are so painful. I hope they don't last too long, but they seem to like to run their course.

We popped out for cat biscuits and some fresh fruit and veg. I have cleared the fridge out and sliced all the meats. Tonight we are having cold turkey and ham, chips and pickle.

Poor DGS couldn't come round on Boxing Day because he is absolutely full of cold. I sent all his pressies back with DGD and a plate of food and some J2O and cans of coke.

Lainey I am pleased Mum managed a little turkey and gravy, I hope she enjoyed it. Enjoy your days with her, time seems to be short now and she is obviously very frail, as you would expect. Her spirit must be so strong she was determined to be with you all at Christmas, but she seems very tired now.

I have started to tidy the hiuse, I just have to find places for all our presents so will do that tomorrow. Thursday, Himself is with the heart specialist so will see what he has to say, I just pray his kidney function has improved, just a little bit would be reassuring. It was a bit difficult when they said George Michael had died from heart failure, Himself knows it will happen that way for him, but I try to keep him buoyant and he seems to appreciate it.

Enough of my ramblings, enjoy the rest of your week if you can

    Much love

Candlelight - don't compare Himself with George Michael because the latter's heart problem was most likely caused by long term drug abuse. Nevertheless, the world has lost one more great talent, which is sad. 2016 I think can be labelled the Year of the Grim Reaper, a glass of something raised to celebrate its end, and a wish for a brighter 2017 for all of us.

  • Thank you Nargleblast, he does get a bit down because of the prognosis but I am determined to keep him as healthy as I can and determined to reach our golden wedding in June.

It has been a dreadful year for losing celebrities, and poor George was a fragile man yet so talented and what a good looking man he was in his youth. Dear Liz Smith has gone as well now, I know she was 95, not a bad age by any means but such a lovely funny lady. We have another 4 days to go, please no more.

Hoping for a better 2017 for each of us

Heard this evening that the actress Carrie Fisher and writer Richard Adams (Watership Down) have been added to the list. RIP both of them. What a year!

Well we had a lovely day yesterday with both DSS coming over for lunch and staying well into the evening. They gave us some very thoughtful presents, mine was the Boss's autobiography, good stuff Polly :)
The only disappointment was the beef, I had splashed out and brought a piece of rump from W8rose which had a port and Stilton stuffing, paid a far bit for it but had to resort to sorting through just to find pieces without sinews running through it :( Good job I had done a mountain of roasties, veg etc so the hollow-legged ones were satiated but was still annoying, think I will make an official complaint.
Have spent most of the day with Mum, she sleeps a fair bit now and is still being sick on occasion despite the new tablets, not sure how much longer she will be able to stay at DB's as think we are all starting to feel out of our depth a little at managing the pain etc. The hospice lady is due back on Thursday so will see what she says then, we all could do with a bit more support now.
I won't be seeing her tomorrow as my SIL's family are going over, Capt S has suggested we go out for breakfast which is one of our favourite things to do, might even have a little look around the sales if it's not too crowded.

Think you are right Candlelight, have suffered from mouth ulcers in the past when I've been run down, might see if I can pick up a tonic when we're in town tomorrow. Will be thinking about Himself on Thursday with everything crossed for a good result on his kidney function.

Right, time for the second part of the A Christie dramatisation, night night and love to all x

I would be very upset if my meat had been a cut like you describe Lainey. I've given up writing letters of complaint though because I'm tired of reading a response that is for the eyes of someone expecting a monetary sorry and the company covering themselves so they don't have to. I wish they would understand that many of us just want to draw their attention to their shortcomings, ensure it doesn't happen again and a sorry.

We're away in the caravan for a few days in Northumberland. We've been to Alnwick today. A canny little place mainly stone built. Cup of tea and a browse round the little shops and I'm happy.

Can I ask if pate is ok to freeze? I keep picking packs up of it but put it down because the girls don't like it and we can't get through it before it needs consuming. If I could freeze it I can always have a little supply.
  • Fuds You can freeze pate , I've been doing it for years . Freeze in the amounts you will use as soon as possible after buying . Just wrap the portions and if you have room keep them in a freezer box to take out as needed and defrost in the fridge overnight .
Brilliant news on the sewing machine , I bet that quilt will be finished in no time . Enjoy your break . Freezing fog here doubt it's much better with you tonight .

Sending good result vibes to Mr Candlelight for tomorrow .

Lainey I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow . You've all coped wonderfully looking after Mum but you can't do it all . The hospice are the experts so if needed you can hand the care to them with no feelings of failure as you've all done all humanly possible and no one can expect more xx

I hope all are enjoying a bit of down time after their celebrations . SM should be enjoying her holiday now . That was a nightmare trip home Floss !

Lyn I imagine is counting the days now , i hope Ruthie has time to put her feet up .

Stay warm and well all .
    Much love
    polly xx
It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

There but for fortune go you and I.
  • Greetings all. Glad everyone had a nice Christmas although I too would be complaining to W8rose about the beef. It's too easy for large supermarkets to churn out poor quality at this time of year and get away with it because people are so busy.

Christmas Day dinner was good, all very tasty ( the 3 cheese terrine starter was very much commented on ) and enjoyed by all. The decorations were down by 10am on Boxing Day and every trace of Christmas erased which was a bit sad but as we were heading off can't have it every way.

Pollyanna - you are right. We are now at our place on the Gulf Coast so relaxing in the sun and planning on some upgrades while we are here. We bought the place fully furnished and there is way more stuff than we will ever need so I will be sorting through crockery and things to donate them to charity. Planning some chilling out by the pool tomorrow - I can barely swim but I like to paddle around in the shallow end looking like a natural water baby.

Fuddle - Alnwick is very pretty and I remember the tea shops well :) im not a huge coffee fan so brought tea bags with me- i will act like the locals in every other way but I can't go without proper tea for weeks on end!

Lainey - hope all goes well with the hospice nurse tomorrow. You have done so much for mum so take all the help you can get.

Fingers crossed for Mr Candlelight today.

Hopefully Hoglet and Lyn are both enjoying well earned breaks.

Nargleblast - I'll second the thought of 2017 being a better year. I can't work out if the reason we are losing so many well known people is due to the fact that everyone's lives are so public. Nevertheless it seems a constant stream of bad news and families lives devastated along the way.

Floss - 70 mph on the M25 - that wont happen again for a long time :D

AOT - hope you are well.

    Hello everyone,

Just a quick visit to say that I hope all goes well with Mr Candlelight's hospital visit will be thinking of you both.
It's been a rough night after having to call the emergency doc out to administer morphine injection, the hospice lady is due around midday so positive thoughts please my friends as we really need more help now.
Thank you and love to all x
