  • Back again . Three full nights sleep now and I can't recall that in decades .
Candlelight I know exactly what you mean . DD has had decades of sleepless nights , as the physical health problems increased she has been sleepless for days . A cocktail of meds helps now if the pain doesn't cancel them out . She has been on two forms of morphine for the last few years and is allowed very high doses of both but has kept to the lower level by her own choice . After her weekly mtx at teatime today she has taken a higher dose as she decided it was silly to suffer when she needed the help . Due to the sickness the mtx can cause and constant trips to the loo I am hoping she wont get a bad reaction and the pain killers will do their job .
Well done on the freezer , it's a few months since I last did mine , my 16 year old huge chest freezer is in the very cold garage so I must confess with freezing fog forecast for the next few days it will require more motivation than I feel at the moment . Take care and stay warm xxx
Monna dear I would treasure a Monna book of wisdom but as you don't have time to write it and I don't have time to read it thank you for the kind thought :D I must try and get back to the fence re the house sale , good luck and stay under the radar where possible - volunteer for anything that gets you out of the house , perfect time of year for helping elsewhere and as you have years of doing so not unexpected or to be seen as avoidance tactics . x
Floss it took me the full 25 year term to pay off my mortgage and I was just glad I'd done it despite the difficulties and sacrifice . I vowed never to fall for the offers of loans and second mortgages unlike some of my neighbours at the time who are now pensioners trying to still clear debts . I can honestly say to have a good roof over my childrens head and excellent schools made it worth every monthly payment . Last week it was 16 years since I made that final payment plus a hefty sum to settle the endowment mortgage shortfall which many lost out on . That was one of the best days of my life . Security is precious and I understand why Fuds wished for it so much .
If I don't get on later I'll see you all tomorrow . It's blissfully quiet here may it remain so tonight .
Take care all , sleep tight

Another vote for a Clearview, Fuddle. I had one in my beloved cottage and had no other form of heating. Sometimes I had to open the back door to let some heat out.

Pollyanna: normally I would certainly make arrangements to be busy elsewhere during the selling process. Unfortunately I am the only one who thinks that presenting a 'shop window' house is important. Also, if I'm honest, some of the clutter is mine and will have to join the rest of my possessions in my friend's garage.

Ah well, it all keeps boredom at bay.

I took an opportunity while online today to check my state pension date... I will be 67 when it is payable, so will have a further 30 months of mortgage, which will absorb 2 weeks of state pension (at todays figures).

I just have to explain why we took on mortgages til we're pensionable, DH remortgaged his house (where I've lived with him since 2006), to cover an endowment shortfall and to provide £50k to buy the house next-door, with my mortgage. We've knocked connecting door thru, I have a kitchen fit to bake professionally, DH has a dedicated office with a huge west-facing window to help his SAD, and we have spare rooms to accommodate our (my) sons & DiL, or my brother, wife & niece, or DH's brothers & SiLs. Our families are scattered, with us living centrally to all, so we are a natural place to gravitate to for getting together.

Yes, It's a financial commitment but we don't do frequent holidays, we cherish time with our families & friends, we can live on one level.if needs be, and if push comes to shove we can brick up the door and sell my house ;)

  • Good morning . We haven't got the freezing fog we were promised but a lovely bright sunny morning , a hard frost means it's really cold but I'm not planning to go anywhere today .
Floss what a brilliant set up with your home so versatile . I was one of the lucky ones who just managed the retirement at 60 . I was bur husbandorn the same year as Lyn so I imagine it was so for her . It still makes me angry how younger women had the goal posts moved twice , that wasn't what they signed up for .
I hope mum has slept well Lainey , you have me hankering for sultana cake after your baking may see if I get a couple made later .
Fuds I will respond to your posts from yesterday later - once I get started on doing up houses I forget to stop , a real love of mine .
I hope SM has enjoyed her time down south and managed some warm weather .
How long is it now to your cycling trip Hoglet ? I lose track so easily !
Question for Candlelight . I think I recall your husband has hearing loss and wears aids , if they are NHS aids I would be interested to know how good they are nowadays .
I'm off to hand wash the woollies that can't go in the machine so have a good day all and see you later .

  • I don't know what happened in my post above , should read I was born the same year as Lyn!
Hope the keyboard isn't going weird on me again .

  • Good afternoon all.

Not so cold here so far today. We have been to Asda to do quite a big shop now my freezer has been cleaned out. Have bought DD a toaster to match her kettle (light blue). They all have money at Christmas but I do like to give them a couple of presents as well.

Polly, yes he does wear hearing aids. He went to the GP to ask to be referred, and the NHS must have something with Specsavers, because he had a letter from them inviting him for a hearing test. He has had them 3 years now and they seem absolutely fine. They send him masses of batteries at regular intervals. He has just had his 3 year check and they have adjusted these slightly(all electronically I understand). I think one ear had some loss from last time, hence the adjustment. He seems quite happy with them, and although they fit behind the ear with a little wire going into the ear you can hardly see them.

Lainey I hope Mum has a better day today, she must get tired quite quickly, but she is doing so well.

Lyn well done with the weight loss, and your meals sound so interesting. I found going without a lot of carbs made a big difference to my weight loss, but that was me following the blood sugar diet.

    Have a good day all

    Much love

I forgot to add, my private and frozen employers' pensions will all pay on my 65th birthday, but due to not working full time until after DS2 went to school (expecting their dad & I to still be married and his pension to support us :wall:), I don't expect them to pay much. The ex and I divorced just before the pension splitting started, so I missed that boat to top up my pension :(

Afternoon all, after a very misty start it's not a bad day here now.

Have just been put in the garden to do bit of tidying up and fill up the bird feeders etc, something has been digging next to the bird table, hope its not rats! I don't mind the little mice at all and often see them running across the path, under the gate, getting from one part of the hedge to another, rats are another thing all together.

Mum has been having a better day today, we did pop out to the farm shop this morning and she found some rtc somerset brie which is ripe and runny so has been snacking on that as it dissolves nicely in her mouth. I picked up some of their yummy sausages and also some chuck braising steak which will go in the SC tomorrow to cook all day. DM can easily get in and out of my new car, it brings back happy memories as Dad had a couple of minis and she lives the big dials etc :)
Floss, your house sounds perfect for your needs and although can understand your concerns re pensions etc the flexibility it provides will see you through am sure x
Time I think for a cuppa and slice of tea loaf, sorry Polly :D x

Hope everyone is having a good day and staying warm xx

Lainey, I bet that chuck steak would make a lovely wholesome gravy for your mum. We love lamb shank gravy, and when I make oxtail, I ensure there is lots of cooking juices to make soup :D

Just reading today's papers and "thought for the day" re woodburning stoves being:

    - google online putting in "inconvenient truth about your trendy wood-burning stove daily mail". The subtitle being "They can be bad for the environment....and your health"

Basic gist of the article being - their emissions are the equivalent of passive smoking and those emissions can also affect those of us who don't even have one of these stoves (ie by getting into the air we breathe when out and about and getting into our own homes).

Oh well - I'm glad I've never been able to afford one then in the event:)
