Money but no worse than vehicle exhaust emissions or the output from nuclear, gas or oil power stations.

    Maybe...maybe not.

...and I don't like being forced to breathe in vehicle exhaust emissions actually. It was actually one of the reasons why I moved in fact - a  reason, rather than one of the positive reasons. I didnt know just how much longer my health could stand up to how polluted the air in my home city is. It's that bad that I could actually see the air changing as I came near the city and smell the difference as I walked into it across the city borders.

...and I do remember being very cynical about diesel cars when that was being pushed as "greener"....way before it became clear there was darn good reason to be cynical about them.:)

But isn't that the "home city" you would like to be able to move to? The place you rank everywhere else against, where you would move back to?

If we didn't use the stove we'd be using the central heating and the emissions would be generated at the power station supplying the electricity to ignite the boiler as already like everyone else we use the electricity to power the electric lighting, fridge, freezer, oven and also emissions from using gas to power the boiler. The alternative is frozen nobility and not heating or lighting your home at all.....nope, the stove stays!!!

Part of the reason I can't afford it is the nicest/semi-rural bits of it have rather a large price premium on them. The second sentence did come over as a bit "negative personal" .....
  • Floss I know a number of us on os never got the share of ex husbands pensions . In my case I chose not to bother , I regretted my second marriage as soon as it became obvious I was with a violent toxic drunk, after yet another night in the cells and court he was told next time he would be behind bars . He took himself twenty mikes away but a while later decided he would come back . Meanwhile the law was working on my instructions and he was stunned to be served with a summons to court which resulted in an injunction to ban him from contacting us or coming within many miles of us . He didn't have the courage to attend the hearing and I considered I had what was fair . I was lucky his drunken state meant he never tried to get a share of the house , in my name and paid for by myself so was happy to settle for that .
Your lamb shank gravy has my mouth watering , between you and Lainey I don't stand a chance .

  • Sorry if this post is rather out of place amid a background of lots of recent sadness on here . I have been enjoying the uplifting days on here both yesterday and today amid the underlying sadness .
Money I know this is an open forum but I wonder why you need to express yet another negative opinion . The discussion re woodstoves began in response to a well loved member of our little band who has as you will be aware has known sadness and hard times and always bounces back with a positive vibe and hope in her heart .
We live in a part of the world where artificial heat is necessary in whatever form available . I have walked the walk and talked the talk most of my life on environmental issues and care about the earth . There is no perfect fix . Apologies to my dear friends on here at a time when tough words are not suitable but Money if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all . You have tried to spoil the joy we have felt at some wonderful news , you will have failed .

Been having a little read about wood/multi fuel stoves and emissions and FUDDLE you'll be delighted to know that CLEARVIEW now make a range of stoves that are so efficient that they can be used in smokeless zones, brilliant stuff from Clearview on their website and does away with the emissions from stoves problem doesn't it?

POLLY I hope the above information will be enough to make the woodstove a friend NOT the villain of the piece, I had ours installed purely to allow us to be as self reliant as possible and part of that thinking was that there were less harmful emissions in burning wood than in using gas and electricity to heat our home. No one will ever be able to remove our joy in having the stove, it is the BEST thing we've ever done to make our lives more comfortable and as I said the other day part of that delight is in having the wood to run it already paid for before we use it. Perhaps we could suggest as an alternative
way of cutting emissions that we don't use gas or electricity in our daily lives or maybe ban the motor vehicle??? more people would be involved but it might be fairer than pointing fingers at stove owners.
  • Lyn I think you may have misunderstood my post .You are right about the current models now available and Clearview have always been a good brand and striving towards being kind to the environment . My daughter in Yorkshire has two stoves in her home and one in the cottage she rents out . If this house was suitable I would own one myself . I did not intend my post to be critical of any heating forms and am sorry if you felt I was doing so .

  • Not a bit of it my friend, I stand in defence of Wood Burners of the world, I think they're fab things and I'd be very put out indeed if anyone said I shouldn't have it! All you have done love is be the voice of reason and kindness as you always are, long may it continue xxx.
