  • Afternoon Ladies, I'm glad to be back home, and what a greeting from the lurcher - however, husband although not quite so demonstrative on my return, did make tea so it could have been worse. The concert was magnificent, no kidding, the choral society were joined by their fellows from Bristol and we had a choir of some 300 people wow did they sound brilliant and the In Paradisum from the Faure was breathtaking, the orchestra wasn't from London after all, got that wrong but were the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and pretty darn good they are too. Hope you are all well and enjoying this lovely sunshine - FTM hope Fern is well on the way to feeling better(you too) , KAZ - just remember all phases pass - they might be replaced by something more annoying, but they do go - eventually . It sounds like there might be some peer group pressure about the clothes and I'm sure that the school would be very understanding about late arrivals if you explain the current problems. They are there for parents as well as offsprings and you may well find they are helpful so dont feel embarassed by it any more than you do. Keep your pecker up girlie, you wont believe this now but you really DO miss them when they do leave home. KITTIE - well done on all your hard work, we too are looking ahead and making adjustments to what we grow and how we grow it - but nothing's fallen off yet so we're still as busy as ever!!!!!!!! Cheers Lyn and the Lurcher!

Hi there all, wow what a beautiful day today :)
First of all, I didn't cave and she didn't go to guides.
So, I cut the grass on Friday. I went out in the garden this morning to hang out the towels before I went to bed. I noticed that it appears to have shot up again. I will get out the mower again tomorrow and give it another going over. It should be easier to keep on top of when it's nice and short. Certainly looks better.
I too have had to water today. My hanging baskets out the front have dried out completely. Hopefully I have been able to save the plants. If not, I'll have to replant them (space for strawberries perhaps ;) ). I may take them down tomorrow and give them a good soak in the water butt. I think they need it. The bowl of primroses I had out the front has all but had it. It was so wet when we bought it that most of them were mildewed and mouldy. The soil was still sodden when I checked them on Friday. This afternoon, the soil is dry and crispy and the left over plants are dead looking. I've watered them and have my fingers crossed for a miracle.
Garlic has all popped out of the earth, sweet peas are popping their heads out. Herbs are all up. Need to get some salad leaves planted. I have a large order of cous cous (among other things) arriving from approved foods soon and we love couscous with salad. Hoping for cheap food this year (as always). The first years courgettes really spoiled me. We've had nothing like that since. I'm sure that if we had plants out there now, they would pop the fruit out in this weather!

So the unseasonably warm weather continues up here in the frozen North - some of the blue skinned people from yesterday have morphed into lobsters overnight. It was quite alarming in the office this morning - definitely waay too much flesh on show and a very obvious shortage of mirrors. Ginger hair and lobster face just isn't a good look!

I swear my grass has grown since yesterday - not helped by the fact that my father was out to play with his brand new shiny, high power dung spreader today. He spread the field at the back of my house, and in doing so, spread half of my back garden and I have "dots" on my north facing windows! Of course he was oblivious to what he had done and upon being tackled by my mother about it he was thrilled to know that his new toy was so effective - what a major success he declared - I'm so glad he is happy, I've spent the evening "gathering" little dollops and cleaning windows. I have a feeling 50% of the back lawn is going to shoot up at an alarming rate now! The joys of country living - free poo right on your doorstep - well on your windowledges at least:D

FTM - you've reminded me that my mum was nursing along a rhubard crown for me - I must ask how it is coming along. I love rhubarb - it's so versatile.
Glad Fern is a bit better now - baby lotion beats calamine lotion anyday:)

Kaz - I've been wondering if I should buy a growbag for my coldframe and stick some salad leaves in? I know we will still have frost but I wondered if I kept it in a sheltered spot and perhaps put some of that "wadding" stuff which I have somewhere under the growbag to keep it off the ground - I figure it's worth a gamble, will pick up a growbag at the weekend.

Mrs LW - good to hear you had a nice time. I like a bit of classical music from time to time. hubby can't understand how one person can have such varied tastes in music - my Ipod has everything from classical to really modern pumping stuff for running to my all time favourite - country. I used to be a closet country fan but now I've come out - there's nothing like a bit of rhinestone encrusted denim and a pair of cowboy boots! Hubby is big country fan too - he just didn't see why the star spangled gents boots would be such a good investment. He's far too practical at times:)

Well off to bed now - it felt like a longer than usual Monday today for some reason so hopefully I will sleep well. Night all.

Back quickly - Kaz - have you ever made courgette casserole? I can across this recipe a while back and thought I would make it at some point.
    NO FARMS = NO FOOD
  • KAZ - if you have hanging baskets to fill have you ever considred Tumbler Tomatoes?, little teenie tiny ones that are as sweet as sweeties and very prolific producers, over a longish period. More than justify their existance in the autumn. Lyn.

Hanging baskets can be very difficult to water once they get over dry. A couple of drops of washing up liquid in the water helps. I ordered another butt yesterday but this time it is a decorative one as it is going at the side of the front. It is only for filling by hand but is 300 litres. I put an old swing bin there this week and have already half filled it but it is way too small. I think the run off from the hot tap is the biggest waster and that is going straight into a bucket for loo or garden

Seedlings are the biggest problem. Easy to kill with watering and the sun shrivels them. I am putting butt water into a big planting tray and bottom watering everything as it is most efficient and safest. The seedlings only get a short time though and I mist when the sun isn`t on them

I just made an internet order for tomorrow as it saves using the car. We have an essential 140 mile round trip this weekend but we`ll hunker down after that and leave the diesel for the workers. We went on a long bike ride yesterday and feel so blessed to live in such a beautiful area, half a mile away is flat as a pancake and chock full of nature reserves. This is where we will be spending our holidays

Dd grows tumbler toms and she always has some to hand for tea

I gave dh a static shock when we gave each other a kiss just now. He was going out and we didn`t even touch lips when there was this loud `crack`. Lol now he knows what it is like, I get these shocks all the time. I have to ground myself to prevent them ie walk around in bare feet for a minute. Good job we have a stone floor. It has been really bad for months now, door handless are especially bad, even walking close to a handle. I bet I could light up a bulb sometimes and don`t mention supermarket trolleys!!
  • Morning everyone, another spectacular day down here, wall to wall sunshine and birdsong to die for! KITTIE - I'm not looking forward to a hosepipe ban at all, it couldn't happen at a more difficult time just at the beginning of the growing season - unfortunately it is NECESSARY but, I do think the water companies should put their own houses in order as well as us, the customers. If the infrastructure that carries the water to us was sound, we wouldn't be in such a dire situation as we are would we? We try to only use the car when we absolutely have to and then we try to do all the errands on the same journey , we too live in a lovely area with really good access to both the coast and some lovely commons and woodlands that are really well maintained and managed by our local council, to the point of them planting wildflower meadow in the autumn last year as they had done a survey and felt that the area was not well enough provided with these. Good eh? I am off to Sainsbugs on the free bus this morning, we are lucky enough to have this service twice a week and also a bus to Te*co twice a week as well, so I am trying to shop only using this service as I feel it is much better than taking the car. The only problem I find is that I cannot carry as much as I used to so have to go more frequently. Have a lovely day everyone and enjoy the lovely weather. Cheers Lyn.
  • KITTIE - just read your last post - you must be one of the very few households in the country to not need Solar Panels! What is must be to be a bright spark!!!!!!

It's hot hot hot again today! I find it so hard to sleep when it's like this. I was so tired this morning that I actually went back to bed again for a few hours and got up at 12. I obviously needed it and I still feel tired but I'm off to work tonight so will be in bed for the whole day tomorrow.
