  • Morning all, thanks for your sympathy re the plummet - I spent yesterday feeling very thankful that the lurcher managed to get out of the way in time, and the dawning realisation that if I had splatted him he would now be a dachshund!!!!! SCOTTISHMINNIE - next batch you make put salt not sugar in the one for the comment maker - and charge her double, then stand back and wait!!!!!!! KAZ - theres a lot to be said for cous-cous when all is said and done (a danish freind of mine howled with embarassed laughter every time the word was said, apparently its very rude in that tongue!) and if we do get to armageddon if you havent eaten it all- you can barter it instead! Cheers Lyn.

    Morning all...
MLW..so glad your not seriously injured..poor dog a daschund indeed that really made me chuckle..our dog has himself dragged one our girls literally through a hedge to catch a rabbit..then knocked her off her feet..and was being a plonker and running all over like a cheetah and i bent down to do my lace up and bang...can't remember anything else apart from waking up at home..seems the dog ran straight into me and we banged heads or something..i had a right shiner for weeks i can tell you..the dog was fine...thing is he is a whippet cross with a greyhound so all the speed and no brains..poor chap..

Kaz..cous-cous bartering could become a thing you know..i know the tinned tomato bartering system is good...

Scottishminnie..what a cheeky mare she is..does she not realize that you baked them..maybe you should imply in a tactful way that she has had one to many and should give them a miss for a bit...lol..

Well had an eventful morning..had to take fern to doctors..her face is so red and swollen..she has slapped cheek virus..and it does look awful..she is pasty jane at the momment i have literally covered her in calomine lotion and dosed her up with piriton...poor chick is so itchy..driving her mad..also driving me mad as every 2 mins i get "mum i am itchy again"..must have heard that a thousand times now...
she had a lovely time at the Nene Valley railway..soo tired but excited when she got home...
I got some lovely wallpaper samples for some new picture frames yesterday..gorgeous..will paint frame later..
I liberated some magazines from the re-cycling bins at the doctors..all from last month so will have a good read later..
Went to the library yesterday and got some books for tots and me..i found some lovely ones "crafting for kids"..looks good..so i went to poundland and got some craft bits from there..so hoping to try and keep them occupied..
Went to asda and got lots of reduced meat and pies..got a bag full for £5..added it up at home and it should have cost well over £30..bargain..its all in my freezer just waiting to be eaten...
Right got to go and put yet more laundry out..and we are doing more in the garden..hubby got given 2 old pallets on monday,he has stripped them down and was fiddling about in his shed and came out with 6 wooden edgings for where the apple trees are..and he had put curves and fancy patterns on them..very proud of himslf..until i pointed out that they would be painted and stuck half in half out the ground and no-one would be able to see his fancy patterns properly..bless him..
    love to you all

  • FTM - your pooch sounds as batty as ours, Doc is greyhound, whippet, border collie and bedlington terrier in assorted amounts, with all those breeds to choose from you'd think someone would have included a brain - sadly not in his case!!!!! Poor littlie, slap cheek is horrid and uncomfortable I don't know if it would help or if she would drink it but I always found chamomile tea really good for claming mine down when they felt really poorly, it helped them to relax which made whatever they had easier to cope with. Lucky you with all those reductions from Asda and well done for rescuing abandoned magazines. My DH has a thing about pallets too and I am constantly surprised at the uses to which they are put - we even have friends who run their woodburner solely on pallets too manky to be used for anything else - so when we've finished with they they get used for fuel - result!!!Have a good day, I'm being summoned gardenwards to work out where to put an asparagus bed (something I have coveted for donkeys years - HOORAY!) Cheers Lyn x

I have done my kitchen (food) cupboards! Yay, so happy :D. A morning very well spent I think. I now have a gingerbread cake in the oven and can't wait to taste it. I've also found a recipe for ginger biscuits which I hope to try later on this afternoon. I don't know if I'll be able to though. Depends if they are a cut out rather than drop on as DH bought a baking sheet with holes in it!

Hi..well done on cupboard sorting..i am literally having nightmares about mine..will have to do them when we do the kitchen..i do have a baking cupboard..its full to bursting..take your life in your hands when opening it..do have an advantage of a pot cupboard in the dining room..so excess can go in there..but even thats full...
Have you tried Grantham Gingerbread biscuits..pretty sure you either hand ball it or drop it..but its the best recipe..and the after bite of ginger is pretty cool..i have to make up 2-3 batches..they freeze very well too..
What about putting greaseproof paper on it..to stop them falling through holes.

Thanks FTM, why did I not think of greaseproof? I used it to line the gingerbread tin (well, lasagne dish, I made double quantities!).
The kids like the cake, I'm not so sure really, I think it should be covered in custard really. Perhaps that or cream for after tea?

I was going to say, with your asparagus, have you ever tried it cooked very quickly and then used to dip into runny eggs? It's delicious that way. My kids love it too so that's good.
I've got them both inside as they had a fight out the front so now they are sitting inside quietly. They both just had to go to the kitchen and I could hear them apologising to each other (of sorts). It seems to have worked bringing them both in and making them sit downstairs. At least they can't avoid each other and have to face each other with their injuries in evidence.
My sister and I fought like cat and dog when we were young but never had any guidance. I'd like them to actually be friends rather than 2 people who share a house.
Yawn, I'm tired tonight. Hoping for a very early night. Might get DH to run the bath while I collect DS from cubs and then we can get straight in and into bed :D. Bliss.

  • Oh spare aspsragus and I'm in Hampshire- life is so unfair sometimes!!!!!!!! I must seriously see what is lurking in the depths of my kitchen cupboards too - just hope it hasnt developed into a sentient lifeform on its own, some of it has been in there so long! Will not be able to chat again until Monday as I am off to stay with DD1 who sings with a choral society and they have big concert coming up on Saturday evening, Berliose Te Deum and Faures requiem with a posh London Orchestra in the cathedral in the city where she lives , big treat for me as she buys me the ticket- spoiled rotton thats me, and very grateful for it too - Have a super weekend, looks as if the weather is going to be good - catch up with you all on Monday. Cheers Lyn.

Kaz..thanks for that tip..will try that with the asparagus..seeing as i have got my 2 to eat eggs..yay finally..
And i know exzctly what you mean about the little uns..my older 3 girls would fight and argue..until one day i had had enough..i got mad and shouted at them..not like me..i told them and i quote"there is enough sh*t going on in the world without you 3 adding to it...you are family and family is all you have..we will be there when the sh*t hits the fan and pick you up when your broken hearted and in bits,so shut up and grow up or else"..they never asked what the or else meant..and they did grow up and shut up..they are so close to each other and see each other on a regular basis, they txt constantly and fb each other..i am so proud of them...
right hubby has made me a cuppa and i have a crunchie hidden in the cake tin..
    take care

FTM - I haven't had a crunchie in ages but now I have a real craving and I don't normally care for chocolate. I must remember how much they get stuck in my teeth to put me off!
I think Calamine Lotion is the work of the devil! I've had enough of it plastered on me over the years - chickenpox, measles, sunburn and so on. It's so horrible when it dries and cracks - yeeugh. I do remember when my sister was young mum used to get a calamine mousse for her which was so much better.

Mrs LW - hope your weekend goes well - it's nice to do something different for a change.

Kaz - I usually have skin like a rhinocerous hide (and the behind to match) but I was really narked yesterday. Anyway got in this morning and the "offender" is on holiday for the rest of the week. Before she left last night though she removed the little money box and left a post it note saying that the "charitable collection which would have benefitted so many impoverished and disadvantaged individuals had unfortunately been discontinued due to the mean spirited and churlish behaviour of certain individuals".
It's just as well she wasn't around - I wouldn't normally get involved in petty spats but my blood was boiling this morning. I think in future when I bake I'll hand the cakes round rather than leaving them for people to help themselves so I can be careful to do it when she is away from her desk. One of the others remarked this morning that although this person had suggested and organised the tin her sole contribution to the treat corner over a 6 week period has been one packet of smart price bourbon biscuits!

I'm working from home tomorrow so I shall be able (hopefully) to combine my work with some practical things like getting washing done and so on.

My tomato seeds which are in the little propogator on teh kitchen windowledge have sprouted - about 20 of them which is great news so now I've opened up the lid and will nurse them on from there. Isn't it amazing what keeps me happy now? 20 years ago I'd have been aghast at the prospect of a horrible little plastic box on my window ledge - now I'm peering in it daily to see how much they've grown. I guess I've just grown up at last:o

Mum's trousers are safely hemmed now and she grudgingly admitted there were a few things with missing buttons and little rips so I've insisted she hunt everything down and I will bring them home and mend at my leisure (goodness knows when that will be!). I know she finds it difficult to admit she can no longer mend clothes herself but I don't mind doing it and it's better than them being in a state. i have 5 beautiful jewelled buttons in my box - I decided to revamp a cream winter jacket last year and bought the buttons however they were too small so I had to get the bigger sized ones. I'm wondering if mum has a plain black cardigan - they would look fab on it. I will ask her - they are just crying out to be used.
