I'm a terrible fabric hoarder
I won't throw ANY away as theres always a use for it..
Jeans I save then turn into quilts (cut squares from legs til you have enough ) gardening gloves (draw round your hand for a pattern)
Old school shirts get squared too for quilt stash
Tshirts are used as dusters
Towels are cut down and overlocked into flannels, garden rags or fishing towels
Items are stripped for buttons/zips etc
No wonder my house is so cluttered lol
I am a machinist by trade tho so I do use an awful lot of 'stuff'
(My 3 sons can all sew by hand as I taught them to xstitch when younger, they can vaguely use a sewing machine too as long as its threaded up for them)0 -
I also have wool and fabric and am terrible at starting projects and never finishing them.
I must finish a rug after about 20 years!0 -
morning all...lots of snow here today..school still open so poor fern had to go..we have got the sledge out again and took iris for a quick whizz about..its very cold though, when we got up it was -2.8..thankfully its last day of school so we can enjoy it tomorrow as we are forecast some more later...
Kittie i have a fabric stash..my trouble is my sewing machine is playing up at the moment and needs fixing..otherwise it would be used almost daily..i have made some lovely napkins that are kinda co-ordinated to the person that uses them..fern has green with little flowers, iris has lilac with spots..our son has manly brown with an orange circle..etc..i have also made a table runner from a quilt cover..and matching placemats..i have made each of my littlies a lovely keepsake patchwork blanket..with some of their old baby clothes and bits..very pretty.
Well i am sat in my dining room looking out the window on a lovely snowy scene and watching Mr.Robin whizz about the garden..chuckling at the chickens tiptoeing in the snow..got some carrot soup on the go..and i am patiently waiting for the washing machine repair man to get here...think i might be wasting my time there..he was supposed to ring me before 10..nope nothing..
Been having a prob with school lately..fern has had no proper reading book since january..factual books instead..don't get me wrong they are fine for now and then but not everyday. So i am going in later to make sure she gets some good ones, then we are going to the library to get some for iris..might have a look for me too.
I found some lovely blogs for mums to do crafty bits with the littlies..nice love heart chains,loo-roll people and paper globes..so hopefully we will be busy next week making stuff.
Right i'm off..going to have a cuppa and patiently wait for the repair man.

evening ladies - thanks for the great ideas of things to make. Specially like the old jeans suggestions.
Oddly I too have been sewing. I had a bit of a sort out and found a fleece I really like but now way too big for me. So after a bit of a think I decided to take the sleeves off and sew up the sides to make a gillet. Very nice, didn't want to waste the sleeves though so after swiftly rejecting the idea of legwarmers as seen in superscrimpers I decided to make a matching hat. Nearly done now and looking good. Just going to use the scraps left over to make a flower for both items. Doesn't it make you feel virtuous? OS with a vengeance - a bit like Die Hard with a Vengeance but with more pinnies and less noise.:rotfl:0 -
Evening all - thanks for the Sourdough recipe link Kittie -will be trying that soon.
I tracked down Cream of Celery condensed soup today:) - strangely in my local Asda where they didn't have any before. I only bought 2 tins to try out the creamed corn recipe however at least I know where to get some more.
No bargains in the supermarket today - I sometimes see what there is in the whoopsie bread dept as it freezes well. Although I have a much loved breadmaker I can't cut my loaves thin enough for sandwiches so I still buy a loaf every other week or so and freeze it, defrosting a couple of slices at a time. I noticed today the reduced loaves had only a 5 or 10 reduction - no wonder nobody was buying them!
The rum sauce I claimed to have bought last week was still there for 10p except it's actually Bird's brandy sauce - show how much attention I pay!
I'm doing well in the "using up the freezer food" mission although we are getting towards the odd combinations again. I found 2 slices of haggis at the back of a shelf. They were left over from chicken stuffed haggis when I had people to dinner. I'll donate them to my parents - I can't stand the stuff so I have no idea why I kept what I didn't need and didn't give it away at the time.
I was taught to knit and sew at a pretty early age. I used to embroider and make tapestry's a while back however my sewing these days is restricted to mending and darning. I even made (along with the help of ace grandma) festoon blinds for our first home. I'm showing my age now!
I haven't knitted in years, it wasn't my forte but I would really like to be able to quilt. On almost every trip to the US I see beautiful handcrafted quilts and then look at the price and think no I'm not buying, I will learn to do it myself. I did buy a kit for a cot sized quilt (what I was going to do with the finished article I do not know:o) as I thought it was a nice size to start with. Once I opened it up and saw all the bits and pieces I took fright, put it back in the packaging and it's been there ever since. I'm sure someone once mentioned that John Lewis in Glasgow sometimes had craft lessons - I really should investigate.
I suspect we are in for a wet weekend up here, although it should be mild so I'm not sure what mischief I'll get up to. I had hoped to get into the garden to do some tidying but I keep having to remind myself that it's only February.
Meant to say - I saw the most amazing shoulder bag in the US last year - it was made with recycled jeans - specifically the back pockets and had some crystals attached for bling. It was beautiful and very individual. It was also a ridiculous price and I thought "I could do that" - had totally forgotten about it until I read this thread!0 -

I can highly recommend crazy mom quilts blog because she has tutorials on her site for some of her quilt patterns. I am making her star quilt along quilt as I think it's beautiful. I love that her quilt alongs are free too.

My hubbie made a dice bag for our son for Xmas with back pockets from one pair of jeans and a zip from another (we're at the "aaagh, all our clothes are falling apart at once!" stage of the thrift cycle, most of our jeans being *ahem* several years old...)0 -
Today was a feng shui day ie getting ready for spring ie making room in my small kitchen. I have done a complete about turn re my worktops and have taken out my microwave, after much dithering. Next step is getting rid of my too big and heavy electric kettle when my new induction hob kettle arrives. Honestly every few inches is important. Well I have to be honest, I have ordered a blender and am going to order a kmix mixer and I now have places for them and all tops are spotless, right up to the corners and walls. Some shelves are also sorted and the rest will be done on monday. My problem is high shelves that I can only reach with a ladder (most of them as I am 4`11") and deep low cupboards that I cannot reach without kneeling. I am trying to rationalise my galley kitchen
Do any of you have any bright ideas re how to store dozens of herbs and spices?. I know they should be dark but at the moment they are kept in low cupboards
Book selling is going great. 6 now sold on amazon and 2 traded in. One good book, readers digest book of sewing (1978) is going to a charity shop next week and I am sure someone will be delighted to find it, it will free up 2" on a bookshelf. Really good book but more than I need now
Bank have at last removed the fraud of over £2500 on my credit card account, I have signed a piece of paper saying that it was a fraud and I hope they get the boogers that did it. I also reduced my credit limit to less than half of what it was, it crept up when we moved as I always use my cc for insurance re buying goods
ambersuccubus you have an enterprising dh. Mine has learnt how to use my sewing machine too although there was a lot of (him) huffing and puffing while learning
