  • Re Herbs and Spices. You could always fasten the lids of the small jars to the underside of a shelf, then screw jars on/off as needed.
    Normal people worry me.

Hi everyone. I watched the weather forecast and they say its going to warm up for us ,starting tomorrow. Cant wait to get back digging on the veg plot.
re herbs and spices; I keep mine together in a plastic box on a shelf.
  • I have had a mentally exhausting day and all to do with my herbs and spices. I`ve solved the problem and ordered containers to fit a top drawer just 30 x 40 cm. I can fit in 58 100 ml and 30 ml containers, all screw top aluminium and 70 or 47 mm diameter and all lined with lacquer. I have also ordered some different coloured tapes for my garden labeller and so hot spices will be red, herbs green and so on and all labels will be on the lids so seen at a glance

Dgs is 4 and we are having him here for a few nights this week. First time on his own and he is off on an adventure with us when he wakes up after his first night

The sun has had a massive event and big solar winds are heading our way to hit earth 16/17th. Earth weather is topsy turvy lately, so much snow on the continent. It makes me glad that uk is next to the atlantic

Anyway, like old tractor says, spring is a coming and everyone I have met is so looking forward to the new season. I actually potted my chillis and peppers on today so nature isn`t waiting. Sitting on my hands though re rest of seeds
  • Evening all - hope you all had a good weekend. I think spring is definitely on the way - we're having unseasonably warm weather - oh no - I've just realised Scotland is having it's summer - better get the barbeque out:D Joking apart I swear my grass has grown a bit over the last week or so - it was 46f on Saturday which is unheard of - positively spring like. It would appear from looking at the neighbouring fields the little moles can also smell spring and are popping up.
My gardening fingers are just itching to get started.

I missed the start of the Panorama programme about the tent cities in the US so I'm off to see if there is a BBC+1 on sky somewhere or else I can watch it on i-player. I've seen the Pinellas Hope one near Clearwater, Florida first hand and it's not the down and outs that people expect to see, it's ordinary everyday people who have fallen on hard times. It makes me wonder how bad it must have been during the depression years of the 30's:(

Enough depressing thoughts for now - I may be back later.

It does feel springlike doesn't it? Trying not to get too optimistic about it because I know there is probably more snow and cold weather to come but it is lovely to see the snow almost gone for now although the fields around here are just one sea of mud (ask me how I know):o

Very OS day yesterday making home made ready meals for the freezer and banana loaf from almost given away bananas. Walked down town with the dog to return / collect library books. We only have a small library and I often use it to pursue books on whatever has caught my interest at the time. The staff there are wonderful and really try hard to get me the most obscure books sometimes. Yesterday I collected one called Travels with Boogie by Mark Wallington about a man walking the South West Coastal path with his dog. (my latest ambition although I will have to do it in bits rather than in one session) Very funny and a good read for anyone not just those who like walking.

I have got extra kids here today so won't be on here for very long. Just thought I'd pop in to say hello though :).
DH is going to get a nice surprise when he gets home tonight, I'm moving the alarm clock! He has it on the floor down his side of the bed so I don't get the benefit of the light waking me up and can't see the clock. He turns it off so blimmin quick while he's still half asleep that I never even hear the blasted thing so I'm going to trial it at the bottom of the bed on the blanket box. At least I've got a fighting chance of hearing it or seeing it though!

I bought some cheap coffee yesterday to make coffee cakes with too so hopefully I'll get round to doing that later.
It's a lovely day so I'll be taking the kids out soon, get out in the sun while it's still there!

  • I have been money saving - well a little.

I've inadvertently discovered a cheap "treat" - I fly on business several times a month and the last few times I've picked up a little pack of 2 biscuits in the airport lounge with the intention of having them for my lunch during the day. Well "lunch" never happens as the people I'm meeting with consider that I don't contribute a full day since I waltz in at 9 and leave at 5 so they organise meetings right through the day. It's not unusual for me to have a cup of tea at the airport at 5.30am and then nothing more until after 8pm - however every cloud has a silver lining. Hubby has just discovered the biscuits and thinks they were a nice treat. I'm so glad he's such low maintenance!

I've also cut back on soft drinks - we used to get through a dozen or so cans a week. Now we are down to 4 or 5 and drinking lots more water. Has to be better for us too. If only I could cut out the crisps I'd be laughing.

Still nice and mild here - rather odd but I've not needed a brolly since last week which is nice. Dangerous though - today I left home without it which could have gone horribly wrong. I have quite a large umbrella collection - mostly cheap ones which I've bought when caught out. I really should donate a pile to a charity shop. Not sure if they would take them though - seems to be so much restrictions on what they will take now. A few weeks back I was in the loft and noticed some black bin bags. They were full of cushions of varying sizes and colours. I counted almost 20 in total. I was about to bring them down when I decided I should check before carrying lots of cushions to the CS. I called the local BHF and asked if they would like them - they said not the cushions but could they have the covers. They are still in the loft! That's the whole problem, nobody seems to sell just covers any more - every where you go it's the whole thing so people end up with old unused cushions - there must be a mountain somewhere!
I wonder if they would be any use to a local craft group -maybe they could use the stuffing? Hmmm - will have to think about that.

  • Another use I found is to donate them the a dog rescue place. One near me had an appeal just before Xmas for bedding items as they anticipated a flood of dogs just after. They wanted all sorts of things old duvets, cushions, bits of carpet, sheets, towels, even old woolly jumpers etc. Worth asking them perhaps.

I tried to take some old duvets to the RSPCA near me a couple of years ago. It took me 3 attempts to find them open and then they didn't want them. Gutting, I had to take them to the tip in the end. Such a waste, they could at least have been used for a few times under doggies.
I'll be alright in the future as a friend now has a dog so she'll be able to use them.

  • Maybe it depends on which particular RSPCA shop is approached as to whether they want them or no???

I asked, in advance, if they would like some old duvets I was replacing or no and they said they would, so I duly parcelled them up and handed them over.
