Just got back from walking the dog and my word it's bitter out there. Now getting seriously worried about work tonight. I start at teatime and don't finish till 10pm:eek: If they are right about this snow I could end up stuck 7 miles from home.
Ma
Please make sure you take a flask ( with a hot drink not alcoholic it opens pores and cools your body in the long term even a nip) and energy bar (chocolate) if you do have to walk home, layers of clothes rather than just a couple of heavy items, include a torch and compass - although you sound like an 'old' hand at walking am sure you will.
Stay safe and warm and please post that you are home safe tonight, am sure I am not the only one that will be waiting to here you are ok.

At the moment the only place I have found that has not put some prices up is Cool Trader, a shop I keep forgetting about. Their tins are dearer or you get less like 3 tins of beans for 99p than a few weeks ago when you got 4, but thankfully their frozen food is still the same price and still same weight I just wish I had more room in freezer to stock up more, they are cheaper than Farmfoods and Iceland so if you have one anywhere near you - I don't know it they are a chain or not then do pop in.
I am wondering if it would be worth the petrol to go to supermarkets in another area, ours is classed as one of the most affluent in the city and even reduced items now are only every down by a quarter of the price where as they used to drop quite a lot yet everything is still snapped up. I think its before people would hold off buying till price dropped right down ( reduced around 4.45pm and what is left reduced again around 8pm - but even those reductions which used to be down to 10p are now only half price on the few things left, never much now) but now people are so desperate to buy food they can afford they will snap it up at just a quarter reduced just to ensure they get it, any discount being better than none. Also what doesn't help as the ones in the area who still have money will scoop up all the reductions that can be frozen in one go so makes it harder to get any, not something I or most people can do. SA I was chatting to last night also told me they have been warned about criminals as well, they go in buy up all the reduced price meat and fish, then remove all the packing, freeze it then defrost a week or month later and sell it as fresh from a market stall, so they have to contact the police if they notice the same people buying lots of reduced items on a regular basis. So unless you know the butcher I would check out if you can any butchers stalls at markets, especially if they are a new one, as the meat or fish you buy might already have been frozen and defrosted but if you are told its fresh you will think its ok to freeze. Some butchers running a shop have been caught doing this as well, so if you suddenly find a really cheap butcher has appeared be careful.

me too, I am going to worry about malarkin tonight, please post when you can
we have flakes falling gently now, not much but it is intensely cold. The field at the back is awash with birds and the other fields aren`t. I think they are picking at recycled food ie animal droppings. There is a great big bird of prey sitting up high just watching them
I have started a list for costco, we will be going next weekend en route back from dd as it is not economical to make a costco trip on its own. Frozen raspberries, french butter, nuts, eggs and so on. I do best with a list as we go so infrequently. I am going to have to keep my eyes tight shut near the gardening stuff though
sm, I loved that tale of the biba dress, it is called good karma and you deserved it.
ooh flakes are getting bigger0 -
Morning all.
No snow here yet. I'm rather selfishly hoping that we get some as I love the stuff, but then I live in a city where snow is an inconvenience rather than a disaster. (MaLarkin - I'll add to everyone else - please be careful and let us know you're OK this evening.) I hope it holds off until after the football this afternoon, though, as I know several people who are going to the match and would struggle to get home if it snowed heavily. (ETA - scrap that, the match has been cancelled anyway as the pitch is frozen: come on, you can snow now! :snow_grin And no, it didn't take long for me to get bored with my essay, did it?)
I must also remember to pop up to the shop in a bit to get some milk and cat food, just in case it does snow heavily - last year I ended up feeding the cat my organic beef stew as I ran out of cat food! (Happy cat, anyway.)
I really need to do some serious work on my essay today (the same one that's been due for the past couple of weeks) but my fingers are so cold I'm struggling to type.
I'm trying to hold off putting on the heating as long as I can, but I'll probably have to give in eventually.
Right, off I go essay-wards - I'll be back later when I get bored with it. Stay safe, everyone!Back after a very long break!0 -
We've had snow here today but not much and it's almost all gone now thankfully. We get stuck up here on our hill in more than 2 inches and I have to work a day shift on Tuesday so I don't know what I'd do if the schools get shut
. DH will have to take the day off I suppose.
I'm now lovely and warm here as I've got a roaring fire going. We're all cuddled up on the sofa watching films too, lovely

I've been struggling to keep up with many of my "regular" threads during Jan (GC, NSD, Frugal living) as there's so many new people joined at the start of the year - which is great - but trying to keep up with 6+ pages of posts every day on most of them  has left little time to look at any others!
Will try to catch up with you all tomorrow- hope all is well.....

welcome rising fro the ashes.I like this thread too, it`s nice and upbeat, makes a change from gloom and doom
We had 12 flakes of snow and that was it, all gone and now it is gently raining. I think that was winter
I am quietly watching tv, rosemary and thyme. Nice easy watching. I can`t be doing with the loud programmes on a saturday on mainstream tv
I am trying my best to make a dent in my storecupboard so have again been on my hands and knees with a torch. lol, I have just unearthed a tub of yummy hm mincemeat. Plenty of alcohol in it and made in 2010. I think I`ll make a big plate pie tomorrow and with good os pastry made with lard, as it is natural, like butter but loads cheaper and makes fab pastry. I last made pastry about 2 months ago so no guilt as it will be a rare treat0 -
Well I'm home safe. Thankfully because the snow kept the customers away they let me go a bit early.
It's really bad here and still coming down. A pretty hairy journey home I can tell you. Once I got past the halfway mark I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I could walk the rest but I'm very glad I didn't have to as the wind has got up quite a bit making it feel much colder.
Thanks for all your concern I'm now going to make myself a big mug of tea and get into bed with the electric blanket on and watch CSI. New York

Pretty bad here now snow is getting quite deep..(well I am a southern softie you know lol) We went out earlier in case it had blown over by the morning as its such a rarity to actually have enough to play in down here.
Don't think now that'll be the case,DS3 is already wondering how many days he'll be able to wangle off school :rotfl:
Stay warm and safe all XX0
