Certainly doesn't feel like it. Took the dog out earlier and the hand carrying the obligatory little black bag that I couldn't put in my pocket was numb with the cold despite a glove.

Off to work soon and I have decided I officially hate my job:( so rather than whinging on about it I've decided to look for a new one. A poor time for it I know but worth trying. I have actually seen one advertised that would be pretty damn near perfect. So close to home I could shout at the old man and he'd hear me. Have to give that one a go:rotfl:

Actually don't mind this weather too much, had some lovely walks with the dog over the last few days not looking forward to the snow they are promising us though especially as it is due to hit tomorrow while I'm at work and lord knows what the roads will be like by the time I finish at 10pm. Lots of nasty hills on the way home too.

Off to the horrid job to be frozen solid and bored stiff - what a combination! Stay safe everyone.

It's still freezing here Rosie dog has decided its warmer on the couch than in her basket and is doing a great hot water bottle impression next to me

Nectar have a toolbar which you can collect points for searching on plus I got points to just install it,the girl in MrS asked how I rack up so many points, she didn't know you can collect on Amazon etc..she does now :D

I hope we get the snow as forecasted DS3 has been driving me nuts with the weather forecasts! If we get it as planned Sat night thru Sunday that should give the kids a chance to play and the council a chance to do the roads for work/school Monday..yeah right :rotfl:
  • Would you believe it that 1 February was officially the first day of Spring and the first flowers (snowdrops) supposed to be out? Nope?? Me neither:rotfl:

20 March for the first day of Spring :D

My snowdrops are out and my Christmas roses have been blooming since before Christmas traditionally we look on Christmas morning to see if they are out. Love these sunny, crisp days.
  • I don't think anyone has told the swans on the river outside my kitchen window that Spring isn't until towards the end of March. The males have started patrolling up and down with their wings up looking quite big and fierce and they've been chasing the other swans away, too. Saw a pair doing that mirror-posture a couple of days ago as well. Very serene and beautiful.

It's as cold as a really cold thing here again today. I saw on the weather forecast that we're to expect snow tomorrow night.

Hope everybody is warm and snug and ready for whatever may come. I am, says Mrs Stockpiled and Planned Ahead

the air pressure has been steadily going up since yesterday and is now a whopping 1048 so more of the freezing weather is coming, I am in sw near enough to severn estuary but overland. Humidity is relatively low, particularly in the house and I am aware of low tension around my head area but I think I am adapting as it was worse last night. Low humidity = dry throats and nasal passages

Having in my lifetime suffered from power cuts in wnter, I always go into survival mode and make pots of food that just need re-heating on my trusty camp stove. I am sitting down now, after being on my feet all morning and have made a huge pot of all sorts of veg soup with passata and chopped frozen chillis. I am just about to strain some of the veg out and some of the liquid, which I will thicken with tomato puree. This is going towards making a lasagne for lunch. The remaining soup will be nice as I have put some parmesan rinds in and it can easily be turned into the likes of minestone and also added lentils and whizzed

I have also prepared a large casserole with lots of veggies and mincemeat, I used loads of my home dehydrated veggies and they are soaking in hm white wine. This is going to be lovely as it is all in my dutch oven and will cook very slowly for 2-3 hours in the oven

It is gorgeously sunny again and no heating required until about 5 this evening. Oh I forgot re washed pillows: very very good results. They are taking 24 hours to dry in my very warm drying room and I slept on one last night and it has regained its bounce. I have done 4 and one split (quite possibly bought like that but hidden under a tight cover) but it is still good as the dunlopillo pillows have good covers, like girdles for pillows. Those pillows cost aroung £35 each so no wonder I am chuffed

More chilli seeds arrived from realseeds and are sown in a propagator. I got 100% germination from the pepper seeds so that company gets my vote for seeds. From now on I am tied by seedlings as they are high maintenance but oh so pleasurable.

I have sorted us out. The downstairs on the s side is at 22.5 and that is with the blinds 2/3 down, the sun is still low so we aren`t getting solar shading from the verandah. Summer never gets above 25 because of that. My head felt horrible and `dense` and I know it is to do with the weather and I have just dug out my 2 ionisers as I am convinced there are too many positive ions at the moment re the solar activity going on. The small ioniser is
    http://www.djclarke.co.uk/file06.html
and I have had it for years. The bigger one is an oreck (thank you qvc) air cleaner/ioniser and they are both on, the little one in the small snug where I am now

If I tell you that the solar panels have put the whole hot water tank at 46+ then you will see the strength of the solar radiation. The sky is so very clear that tonight it will plummet to be colder than cold

I have also put some large freezer packs in to freeze, just in case we get any power cuts, no harm done in taking precautions as they will keep the freezer cold for longer ie freezer is in sunny end of open plan kitchen.

    Evenig ..
Scottishminnie and CCP..yes we have snow..and we are forecast more tomorrow...yay..its minus 3.2 here at the moment..and going to get colder..house is nice and cosy..tots are tucked up in bed with big woolly blankets and we have a massive and i mean massive and very heavy bedspread..honestly i get in the bed and cannot move..i am pinned down with the weight of it..

Yes our chickens are very cheeky..the one who tries to escape is called Primrose..now if you have ever seen Fifi and the flowertots you'll know why she is called that..little madam...i swear she marches up and down the fence on patrol..and if you go towards her she will fluff up and start squawking..like a bouncer she is.

Hubby has got next week off work so bedroom do-over is all on for monday.
Kittie you are so organized..i thought i was lol..make me look a little dis-organized..but will take note of your post about the power cuts and be ready for it..i haven't got a stove but if it happens then the barbecue will be fired up to cook on thats for sure..

take care all..wrap up and keep warm in this weather...o and fingers crossed we get some decent snow..we want to go sledging..

  • Keep warm FTM and others. We have really low temperatures forecast for tonight but no snow and it seems further south is getting it much colder than Scotland. I used to like having big heavy beadspreads and flannelette sheets on - you certainly didn't move much during the night! I was having one of my clear outs a few years back and came across a pair of lemon floral flannelette sheets which had been a wedding gift about 18 years before and were still in the pack. I offered them to an elderly couple who live nearby as their house is positively freezing. They were thrilled to bits and in return insisted on giving me an original Biba maxi dress from the 70's. The dress is fantastic and I absolutely adore it - I definitely got the best deal there:)

Don't know about everyone else but every week when I'm grocery shopping I seem to have a "how much is that now" moment. This week it was a little jar of pesto sauce - the cheapest was 98p. I'm positive the Asda SP one was about 68p but they were nowhere to be seen and no SEL either. I think the supermarkets are deliberately taking away SP items to force customers to buy the next cheapest.

I made it to Costco tonight -hubby was in tow so we ate there. 2 baked potatoes and massive fillings, one large diet coke (free refills) and a huge scone and 2 butters - all for the princely sum of £4.35. I never used to be such a cheap date!
Anyway on the Costco trip I picked up 6x 1.5kg bags of Marriage plain flour for £4.69, 5kg of caster sugar for £5.29 and 3kg of icing sugar for £3.59.
I also got some frozen salmon fillets - they were Alaskan marinated - 6 for £12.19 and they look like quite big fillets.

They had lots of gardening stuff in but I was really good and walked by, not looking at all just now. They also had beautiful mens jackets - from blazer types to gorgeous heavier coat types with quilted removable linings inside. Hubby doesn't need anything though - I'm lucky to have a very low maintenance man when it comes to those kind of things:D

I've just realised how late it is so I'm off to fill up the washing machine, make myself a cup of tea and do the daily crossword - what a rock and roll life I lead!!!!

Just got back from walking the dog and my word it's bitter out there. Now getting seriously worried about work tonight. I start at teatime and don't finish till 10pm:eek: If they are right about this snow I could end up stuck 7 miles from home.
Really don't know what to do for the best. I'm taking all my walking gear but although I can walk 7 miles no problem I'm a bit iffy about doing it in the snow and bitter cold at night. I'm a pretty tough old bird but I must admit I'm not keen:o
What we laughingly call public transport round here will no doubt stop running at the first flake of snow (not surprising with our hills) and even if it did keep going on a good night it takes 2hrs to deliver me to the nearest point to home on its route which is still 2 miles away.

Ah well no good fretting just have to handle what comes.

Wrap up well if you are out and about

  • Morning..o Ma larkin..i do hope you don't get stuck in it...its forecast for this afternoon..i just watched the news and we have an amber alert..in one way i am pleased its so cold,it will kill off all those vile little bugs that plague us in the summer and a good hard frost on the lotties does the ground the world of good...in another way i am happy as we get to see the snow and play in it..but then another way feel bad for folks who are cold and have to get to work in it/stranded...

I have sent hubby to town to get us some milk and a few loaves of bread for the freezer..just in case..

Scottishminnie..your not the only one who has the moment of total shock when the prices have gone up yet again..and i do agree with you i think the supermarkets are removing SP items so you have no choice but to buy their own brand or others...bloody ridiculous..I would love to go to a costco but we don't have one near us..that meal sounded great for the price..we went to downtown on thursday..for 3 teas,3 toast and a small drink for iris it was £10.80..i nearly died from shock..it wasn't that good either..
The salmon fillets you got sound delish..my man is low maintenance too..in fact he is so low he makes compo look stylish..
    take care all..
