  • Picked 3lb of sloes last night so will be getting going with the slow gin tomorrow. Also picked the last of the rhubarb which made a totally delicious roasted rhubarb and ginger crumble :) Also foraged enough ripe blackberries and elderberries to be able to combine them with some windfall apples to make two more crumbles for the freezer :)

Up with the lark at 6.00am to slice, blanche and bag up runner beans for the freezer and tonight I will mainly tackling boiling and pickling beetroot

We weighed our HG potatoes yesterday - nearly 120 kgs!! Amazing crop from 4 bags of Aldi seed potatoes and a lot of digging from DH - its certainly been a great year

I had these HM pickles at tea time every Saturday at my Grandparents house and I never knew their quaint official name! :)

Grandparents also served lettuce sprinkled with either sugar or raspberry vinegar. :) Very old fashioned ways :)

  • Hi all..many thanks for well wishes for little fernling..she is fully recovered and full of beans..no - one else is ill thank fully...its a mystery where she got it and how.

Charlies aunt..you sound so busy but its o so worth it isn't..all the hard work pays off..well done you.
SM..hi babe..i too am decorating my home for Autumn..i have made a lovely green and grey wreath for the door, and some bunting spelling out Autumn over my mantel piece..the girls have done leaf bunting..and i am collecting chinese lanterns from our garden to display in a big vase..love it..
MLW..you need to have a sit down after all the jamming and pickling.

We went to Belton again today..it was just perfect..no one was there..we had the entire adventure playground to ourselves..wonderful.
I think we spent almost 2 hours playing..my feet hurt now..the girls were shattered when we got home..
I have bought a proper foot sizer for measuring all our feet..sounds weird but clarks are so expensive but they do measure and fit properly..so i figure if i can measure myself i can get the shoes off the clarks outlet on *bay..without having to run the wrath of the sales lady who looks over the top of her glasses at you..like a school marm.
i hope everyone is ok..and enjoying the late warmth..
    love ftm

  • CHARLIES AUNT my old fashioned memory from childhood is sliced cucumber in vinegar with sugar and chopped dill and spanish onion soaked overnight in malt vinegar with sugar added, both very piquant and good winter fare specially with cold ham or luncheon meat for tea on Sundays, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Sausage casserole in oven for dinner, whoopsied sausages from m&s at 50p for 8 and big pan of tuscan bean soup in the pressure cooker, with smoked bacon offcuts, two types of beans and loads of veggies. I love autumn food, so cheap and comforting!
  • Hello all..hope your all ok..

Well the weather is lovely..we have been going on walks in the afternoons, looking at the trees as they change colour..just beautiful..lots of conkers and acorns and chestnuts..going to get some this weekend.
The hazels in the garden are laden with nuts..and my apples wowsers..never had so many. Once they have dropped we are trimming them right back to let in more light..and the poor cherry tree has got to go..i don't want to but its huge and trimming it will only make it grow faster..and we had more wasps than ever this year..i was paranoid the girls would get stung.
We have been to the food bank and dropped of some tinned stuff and packets of pasta and rice..dog food that jack doesn't like..hoping that it will help someone in need.Been to the charity shop and dropped off lots of books and clothes..picked up a lovely little pixie ornament..very retro and kitsch but i love him..he is on my dining room mantel piece watching the girls lol...
We are going to celebrate Johnny Appleseed...a wonderful man, legend and real. He travelled across America spreading apple seeds for future generations to enjoy..we have done a whole topic on him..soon as we pick our apples we are going to go around and share them with neighbours to celebrate his life..a real hands on historical hero and great teaching aide for the girls to learn about the gift of giving.
The bad news is that my old fridge freezer that i keep my eggs in has finally given up..the engineer told me my insurance policy was worth more than the fridge...so its going next week..and we have found another to replace it..quite cheap and has very good reviews..so that will be purchased next week..nevermind my old one was bought in 1997..so it has done really well...unfortunately all the goulash, lasagnes and soups i had in it have been ruined..o well will just have to make more when i get my new one..
Right got to go..school time and we are learning about shapes all kinds..
    take care all

We used to have this regulally when I was a child. I'd forgotten about it.
