  • Vicky -your post brought back memories of the local flower show. My grandfather was treasurer and insisted we all enter something in every category in the children's section. I vividly remember making leaf boards and minature gardens. Happy memories!

Busy, busy at my end. Hubby's workshop construction continues and I've now painted as much as I can without ladders. I hate heights so won't be doing anything higher - he can finish it off himself now. We're off to the states at the weekend so he's having a panic about getting things done before we go. It doesn't seem to matter how organised we are before going on holiday so many things always seem to crop up at the last minute!

I've been enjoying the fruit from my apple tree - made crumble and apple oslo cake at the weekend. Will have to check which fruit look ready to drop off and get them used up.

It's a bit dark and gloomy here today so I suspect there may be rain ahead - sadly I've had to put my washing in the drier which I'm not too keen on however I don't like it to pile up either so needs must!

  • Cold, wet and dark here on the East coast too!

It will have to get a lot colder before DH will allow the heating to be put on or the fire to be lit :) I'm relying on my slatted pulley dryer/airer in the kitchen to dry things on overnight - one of the best things I've ever bought. It must utilise all the escaping cooking heat to dry the clothes as there is no heat in the kitchen.

I hope that the cold spell will encourage all the wasps to hibernate - we must have ushered a dozen of them out of the kitchen over the weekend - dozy and drunk on fermenting fruit but still capable of delivering a nasty sting.

In our staff meeting this morning, there was a discussion regarding the Christmas party, meal out and Secret Santa - too early to think about for me at the moment ...and tbh I find all the false Xmas jollity a bit yuck as a lot of the staff haven't got a good word to say about each other for the other 51 weeks of the year!!

  • I refuse to go to our Christmas do, everyone want's to go somewhere expensive between £40 to £60, which is about my Christmas budget for everything.

  • Good for you HESTER stand firm and don't let anyone push you into doing something you don't want to do,(Not that they would be able to anyway, would they?). I think it's about time that this country and the people who live here actually touched base with reality and stopped trying to live the life that media, magazines and fashion says we should live. We don't need it all, and we certainly aren't worth it, whatever it is eh? Cheers Lyn xxx.
  • Hello...wow its so good to be back...my laptop is all fixed and brand spanking shiny and new...cost a bit..but it was my own fault..i knocked it off the dining room table and it broke..a lovely man fixed it for me..

Well how is everyone well i am hoping..we are good thank you..i had an accident and spent 3 hours in A&E..thought i had broken my thumb..in my clothes horse..it just collapsed on me..it hurt a lot. and my thumb was at a funny angle and looked like a black sausage...thankfully its just very badly swollen and very painful..unfortunately its on right hand and yep i am right handed...never mind..teach me to be more careful.
We have been home schooling everyday over the summer holidays..so when they all went back we decided to have some time off...lovely..just relaxing and going for walks..playing with jack(rascal)..

I can hand on heart say i have missed you all...my evenings have been pretty quiet..but i have been reading my veg books and catching up on my crafts..so not too bad.

I have good news...Samuel has got a job...as a joiners mate..he is loving it...not bad...he gets his own wages and works long days for them..he is learning so much..his boss has already said he wants sam to do a plumbing course next year..so thats brilliant..am so pleased for him.

My frugal ways are still there..i have been busy in the evenings making knitted scarves and i am attempting a knitted blanket...
We have been making jam and chutneys..ooh i love courgette chutney..i eat it with just about everything..i have a new recipe choclate cobbler..its so easy and everyone loves it...will post if anyone wants it.
I have made an Autumn wreath for the front door...plus i have decorated my outside porch area...i put up some lovely quotes and signs..the girls decorated little stones with glitter and i found an old oil tin with a tap on it at the bottom..i sprayed it black and put our house number on it..its outside the door..looks nice and welcoming to all who come.
I have started a family picture wall...got lots of my baby pics and as the girls and sam have grown up..i put them in black picture frames and have them going up the stairs on both sides...i have just cut out and ready to go..some large letters..one for each child..i plan on making wool covered letters to pop on the wall next to their picture..

My friend has had a major sort out of her daughters clothes and gave e 2 huge bags for both Fern and Iris..thats them sorted for a while now..a lady down the road has had a glut of courgettes and gave me some..and 2 ladies have started to sell their surplus at the gates of their homes on the way into town...i have bought some lovely gooseberries and plums from one and a bramble jelly and lovely foxgloves from another..they are just lovely.
I have also learnt that we are second in line for an allotment..yay..o i can't wait...i so miss our old ones..

I am so glad to see new ladies on the thread..and that everyone is busy and happy...
right i got to go..have a quick cuppa and then get dinner ready..and then wait for the menfolk to get home..
take care everyone..i will be back..
    love

  • Welcome back FTM I've missed you loads. Sorry that you are still in pain from your poorly sorely thumb, poor you!! Glad all is well and that the girls are enjoying the homeschooling and craft activities and that clever Sam has got and is still enjoying his new job. Brilliant news about the allottment too, just in time to get it dug over for the winter if it happens soon, well done.

We had the best fun at the wedding weekend, you'd have loved it doing all the flower arrangements, buttonholes and bouquets and icing all the cupcakes on the Friday, and my DD had made 100 croissants and danish pastries for the open house brunch they had for all thier guests on the Sunday and her Father in Law spent the whole morning making scrambled eggs for everyone as they were needed, smashing stuff. We were asked to provide them with not a wedding present but a hamper to feed them for for most of the week and that was such fun to put together, there is some lovely posh produce out there, and I don't get to buy that kind of thing often. They only went out for one meal, not because they had to but they felt guilty not putting anything into the local economy!!! Back now and at work again and on the 23rd September we get to find out if Lentil is a boy or a girl, oh, I just can't wait to be Oma!!! In fact they asked people not to buy them wedding presents as they have thier home set up and asked for donations to split between the Hospice that DD worked at for 6 months and thier local Shelter for the Homeless and with the gift aid were able to give £1,000 to each of them, lovely!!!

So nice to have you back with us my friend, Love Lyn xxx.
  • Hi lyn..o wow the wedding sounds so amazing..yes your right i would love it...it sounds like a real family affair which it what its all about...
A little lentil..how exciting..am so pleased for them and you..its going to be a great time...
Thank you for best wishes for my son..am so proud of him..he has started to pay board..i am putting it in a savings tin..i think it makes him feel a bit more grown up paying his way..
And as for my thumb...ooh it does hurt still...i bought 2 new clothes horses from wilko's..when folded they don't seem to weigh that much..i had difficulty with the folding catch..and yep you guessed it it collapsed on my thumb. For a total second i thought i had chopped it off..i felt sick..but thankfully Simon was here and got me to the A&E quite quickly...
Wow now thats a lot of donation..makes you feel good to know that there are still some folks in the world who really care..well done to them.
I hope docky dog is ok now..is the cooler weather suiting him..
right its bathtime for the tots...
    take care lyn.
    love ftm

Hi ftm, welcome back, we've missed you. Hope your thumb is feeling better x

At folks house using my tablet so will be brief. Hope you are all well.

Lovely weekend seeing all the family. Not looking forward to driving home tomorrow but will try and head off early to avoid the worst of the weather.
  • Hester -good for you. I don't go to my works Christmas do either. I work with lovely people but I just think there are much better ways of spending the cash.

FTM - good to see you back - we missed you:) Glad Jack is settling in and great news about Samuel too.

MrsLM - the wedding sounds perfect. I actually declined the last wedding invitation we received as I felt it was just going to be a day of showing off to excess and over the top-ness if you know what I mean. I don't object to people doing that if it makes them happy but I just didn't feel I wanted to be part of it and I had a perfectly good excuse for declining that didn't cause offence so nobody was any the wiser.

Heard the weather is a bit extreme back home so hopefully everyone is safe and well. The weather isn't exactly perfect over here this morning either however I don't care - we'll just adapt our plans to deal with it. Enjoy the last of the weekend everyone.

Good to see you sis, loved the homemade wine and pickled courgettes.

Sunday evening again, sat in front of fire, burning free wood, think its an old staircase spindle currently alight.

Have meal planned for the next week, including while away next weekend and mum staying to house and kid sit.
I have made crumble from donated fruit today, love a free pudding. :D

Have a good week all, x
