Some days I relish the challenge, and other days it really gets me down.

I just seem to have so many things that knock me sideways with regards to money. Everyone says they have never known anyone have so much bad luck with money!

I have had so many companies make mistakes with billing, which combined with my awful budgeting skills and impulse spending has left me in a mess (for the second time!)

I think that's why this tax money has shaken me so much, because I can see it all going horribly wrong again if I make the wrong decision.

I do quite enjoy the challenges which involve creative type things such as cooking, mending clothes etc.

    Every cloud I guess :D

I dont want you to think I'm lecturing you or take this the wrong way but the thing is you appear to have "guessed" how much you earned and how much tax you have paid, so at the moment its not really your money.
I know how tempting it is to spend it even to pay off debts but I really would wait until you know the actual figures. Letter from HMRC should take about 14 working days if you phone them, and you can then amend your tax return. Its not worth getting into debt with HMRC.

Any advice is appreciated and won't be taken the wrong way :D

I will ring HMRC tomorrow. I am just dreading them asking me about numbers because I have absolutely no clue at all. I find the whole thing a foreign language!

I am not going to spend the money. Although I am saying this now, I haven't been in control of my finances anywhere near long enough to trust myself. That is scaring me because I know how I can be so impulsive with money when I feel low

Yes I know exactly how you feel. Chin up and carry on is what everyone says..when all you feel like doing is climbing under the duvet & hiding

  • Dont worry about HMRC just tell them you need a list of employments for 2010/11 with pay and tax details for each. Tell them who you worked for and check they have details for all the jobs. If there are any details missing you may have to contact the employer yourself for duplicate details, but hopefully all details will be on HMRC records. You should not need to give them any figures at this stage.
Once you have the figures you can use the calculator on their website or post the details onto the cutting tax forum and someone will work it out for you and give you advice on how to amend your return online if you need help. :) Try not to worry...easier said than done I know x

    Thanks for the support :)

I don't think it is the numbers side so much that is stressing me, more the pressure from family to make certain choices which I don't totally agree with.

The advice on this forum is more in-line with what I would rather do though so I think I am going to stick to my guns and go with that. I have made so many poor decisions in the past, I think I need to start really trying to do the right thing!

    Oooh don't ask!!

I altered my tax return to include the new figures they gave me, and now it is coming out that I owe them £700, which is also wrong!!

I am getting in a right tangle with all this!

And to top it all off, because I felt really low and stressed I went on a bit of a spending spree. When will I learn??!

I haven't been able to get through on the helpline yet. Been on hold for sooo long and it will cost a fortune on my phone bill :(

It's not stuff I can return unfortunately. I have just been of the attitude that if they have caused me this much stress by sending me random amounts of money, it would be rude not to spend some of it to cheer myself up!

At least you know what your spending triggers are, I think if its to much temptation you should move it to an account you dont have access to now you know you shouldnt have had it you know you will need to repay it :o
