I'm growing both basil and coriander indoors - sowed them a couple of weeks ago and they're both coming up a treat. The coriander, especially, must be at least 3" tall now!

Ironically, it's the chives that don't seem to germinate for me. I bought a new pack of seeds this year and sowed at the same time (and in the same trough) as the others but only a bare handful have come up. :-(

Chives are like triffids here, I divide them every year, even my neighbours have enough now!

Yours are up early as their indoors, I get better results direct sowing Coriander outside, think my south facing windows stress it too much indoors as it bolts really quickly otherwise.
And no room for basil indoors yet........too many others waiting for warmer nights........if only I had a greenhouse, bigger garden, cold frame, direct access to my garden, more windows to put plants, the list goes on and on.............

Cheers for the Purslane discription but I think I'll pass on that,I'm not much of a salad eater apart from a bit of mild tasting lettuce.

I think it was summit to do with peas, the bog roll tubes.

I'm still trying to work out what veg is low in vitamin K as I have to try and avoid that as its my medications antidote.

I've saved some loo roll tubes for planting seeds in them but I can't or the life of me remember what it was, anyone got any ideas?

    Runner beans! :D
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

My pond liner has arrived. I have a pickaxe and a spade. :)

    It's cold and I'm lazy. :(

I'll just have a cup of tea whilst I consider the design...

I have a day off today and it's not snowing. Hoorah!

I'm off to the market to see what seedlings/seeds/stuff I can pick up, then this afternoon I am launching the local gardening competition - beetroot growing with a 4 year old.

    Somehow I don't think I will win.

Grew tomatillos last year, wont bother again, messy plants, and not many fruits for the time and space they took. Hubby did like the mexican chutney I made with them though, but only got 3 jars worth so not worth it.
I am surprised, normally I get more tomatillos than I know what to do with, but they do require their own bit of space to grow properly, about a square metre per plant I reckon.

Fay you were a touch early with basil, usually sown April or even May. As its a Mediterranean herb it likes lots of sunshine and warmth. It can be grown indoors or out.
Coriander takes ages to germinate, Mine was sown 2 weeks ago (outside) and I won't expect it for another week or so, so you've done well to get 7 up and running. It always bolts for me in the summer so I make another sowing around July and freeze for winter use in ice cube trays.
    Hi Annie,
I thought I was too early with the basil but wanted an early crop so thought I would try it. It seems to be doing ok now-its in the kitchen on an east facing window sill within the warmth of the aga so thought it might be ok. I will wait next year!
I sowed some more this week in the greenhouse ready for going in the grow pots with the tomatoes. Coriander seems to be the bane of my life-I've tried it for about 4 years now and never done well with it, inside or out :( I only grew herbs in the last house as it was a courtyard garden, and most did well but not the coriander!

    Hi Little Vics,

Good to hear from you. Which market are you going to? I'm at work today but would be good to know iof any local markets which are good for seeds / seedlings being, what with me new to the area.

    Hello!!!

There's normally a stall on the market in Todmorden on the weekend, but it can be a bit hit and miss. The other place to keep your eye on is BlackshawHead - the methodist church up there normally has a plant sale at some point. I'm pretty sure they advertise in the Hebden Bridget newspaper.

There's always Gordon Riggs garden centre in Walsden too - it's massive. Literally massive.
