Does anybody else keep checking seed trays every hour or so for germination? I expect my newly planted seeds to have germinated, sprouted true leaves and be pot bound in the same day.Sadly it's not that fast and no matter how many times I check a day nowts happening. It's sooooo slow.

I'm on the coast, so got the full brunt of the North Easterly gales last night ~ my poor cherry tree has lost a lot of it's new leaves overnight :( I don't know if it's an edible cherry for humans (how do I find out??), but we got loads of fruit last year, the young blackbirds gorged themselves silly!! :rotfl:

hazzie & alias, I know i'll be exactly the same when I plant my first seeds :o Hoping to get out today to buy some little pots (or can I use yoghurt pots??) & a tray (cat litter tray??). Was thinking I'll go to Poundland to see if I can find myself a living gooseberry plant as well :D

    Hi

I stumbled upon this thread a few days ago and have been hooked ever since! You are all so enthusiastic and share some very helpful tips!

I have a small garden and sunny windowsil so I thought I would try and grow a few things as a try out!

My work hours have been severely cut so I have time on my hands but not a lot of cash!

I want to try lettuce as we eat it very regularly and pay at least £1 a pop so this would be a good way to cut the pennies. Can anyone recommend a good cut and come again variety that I could sow in pots and get a continuous supply throughout the summer?

I'm also going to try growing herbs as that is something else that is quite expensive. We have a bay tree and rosemary bush in the garden. I have Basil seeds from last year that someone gave me but I didn't use and my friend is giving me a sage cutting - so thats a start.

Any help/advice/tips you could offer would be greatly appreciated :T:T

BTW I should mention, we have had snow through the night & all morning. It isn't sticking, but I am glad I brought my plants in yesterday!

It is very windy too - my greenhouse blew down the garden this morning!

Well after our 6" of snow early yesterday, we got loads of rain then sun and the snow is all but gone now. Crazy, crazy weather.

My plants are all out in the cold porch but they seem to be ok there. If anything they seem to be growing. I'm thinking I was making them too warm before. Even the marigolds that survived, are now growing properly.

I've been looking at the 10 day forecasts (impatience rearing it's head again) but although they don't show more snow or frost, the nights do go down to 3 or 4 degrees so still too cold to plant out I think?

I wouldn't have these problems if I had a (heated) greenhouse. :D

No Lemon, not unless they're already there!:p

Blowing a hoolie here - hope my greenhouse stays put because I still haven't fixed the brackets to anchor the blocks to the slabs yet. :o

My beetroot seedlings are getting a good flattening too.

Hi mumsiemum, welcome to the thread. I think salad is a great idea as it's so expensive and if you don't use it all up it just doesn't keep does it? Last year was my first year growing so I just bought a packet of cut and come again (T&M I think) and used that. We were bad at successional sowing so didn't do great with it, but what we did grow was far superior to that in the shops.
This year we have bought two terracotta bowl type planters and we have the large one we used last year. In our large one I started cut and come again about 3 weeks ago and that's growing nicely-I can't remember where this was from, just a garden centre so likely to be one of the basic ones. In the two bowl planters I have started lambs lettuce in one and rocket in the other-love both and they're both really expensive. I've also got a trough that I am going to be sowing into but will do this in another three weeks or so, to hopefully have a good crop of lettuce/salad leaves this year.

Weather has been terrible today, raining all day long with snow flurries in between and very cold. Looked in on the greenhouse and all seems to be ok and the veg patch looks like it's enjoying the rain-not sure about the cold though :(

I would get your basil started asap, mine is on the window sill and is starting to look like basil-but I planted it about 4-5 weeks ago. Having said that I struggle like mad with herbs and don't know why. I've currently got a pot on the windowsill labelled coriander but think I could be done under the trades description act-there are about 7 sprigs of what do look like coriander but there is now way I can see if growing into a healthy bunch anytime soon! :rotfl:

    Hi...MM

    Greetings. Welcome. :D

Someone else will have to recommend a lettuce for you, as I'm afraid I don't eat, or grow it. _pale_

Tips and advice? Err...yeah, just wade in with questions when you think of them!

And we all like a nice photo of what you've got. ;)

    I mean the GARDEN! :p
