I have a lot of flowering dandelions. What can I do to get rid of them?
Pull their pretty yellow heads off. Then dig them up - a knife works well - you want all the taproot.Little_Vics wrote: »I have some seedlings that are growing too big for their toilet rolls. Don't want to put them outside yet, so what can I do?
Put up with them. You sowed them too early, so it's your own fault.I'm assuming they're beans?

Peppers don't mind being a little cramped. How big is the pot? The answer is: "if you want to".Little_Vics wrote: »My chili plant has survived the winter. The soil has some green stuff growing on it. Shall I repot it?
Same answer as above. If it isn't doing any harm...

Ok, I've helped to the best of my ability. Pics please! If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Is it really too late to sow my Leeks outside now,I live Middlesbrough way so it's poo cold and wet weather. If its too late I'll just save my seeds till next year,if it's fine I can pop them in tomorrow if the rain ever stops.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0

Right - here you go. All advice welcome. I hope the photos don't turn out massive.

oops - they are a bit big. Sorry. Anyone know how I can make them smaller when I post the IMG code instead of having to resize them individually?0

That looks so healthy! Taken some patience to tend to its needs through all those years? Seems to be paying off though :T
Inspiring me to grow something fruit-tree-like in a pot, has to be able to put up with no sun until the afternoon though.
Have seen a few peeps with free standing shelving thingies outside now... do you leave them out all year round? I'd like to get something similar but not sure where to look or what I need to look for to make sure it doesn't crumble to pieces through the first winter.
Last couple of days has been frustrating. Yesterday looked like rain, until deciding to go out and buy some seeds. Just as I left the house, the sun broke through, at least, for about 45 minutes. I was stood in the garden centre grounds looking at flower pots - heavens opened then and I got soaked.
Came home, repotted some herb plants I bought - Sage, Oregano and Thyme. Sun came out for 20 mins, then I got tipped on again. Today is the same story, short spell of sun, followed by short torrential downpour of hailstones.. followed by sun, followed by rain. Makes me guilty to be sat here while the sun is out, but as soon as I move to do something, it goes away again. Boooooo!!
All I've really been doing is running in and out of the garden moving the frail little herbs in and out from under a table0 -
Pics look fine size-wise to me, LV, although they seem to grow on the 'Reply to Thread' page!!
Your garden looks lovely, I really like the surrounding stone walls & the flower bed in your first pic is very pretty.
No real advice to offer I'm afraid, but your chilli plant looks like it might have some sort of infestation?? With regards to dandelion alley, I would try pouring boiling water on them with a pinch of salt as it looks as if it could be difficult to dig them out.
Agree with RedLass, the apple tree is fab :T'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -
to be honest I've done nothing to it since it was given to us. It was planted by a family friend on the day I got engaged, and she gave it to us a couple of years ago when it was about 1/3 the height it is now. The local cat has taken to snoozing in the pot which is quite cute.
Those shelves came from IKEA bargain basement a few years back for about a tenner. Very handy when bbq-ing and hanging out in the garden. Plants somehow don't do too well on it, but that's probably because it's in a bad place for the sun.0 -
pink poppy - thanks for the dandelion tip. I've got loads in the garden that I pulled the heads off because they are growing in clumps of bluebells. Once they've flowered and died back I'll tackle the roots I think.0

Oh that's a lovely present to be given, doubly good that it is doing so well then.
IKEA, makes sense, always seem to be drawn to their things. Will take a look on their website, might be something similar still that I could pick up on my way through to somewhere... shame they charge £35 for delivery, else I'd buy a lot more from them.
Poppy, thanks for the dandelion tip also. I have a patio that is full of them (needs re-cementing) so will give it a go.
Few hours left in the day, toying with nipping outside to sow some petunia and nasturtium seeds to put on a windowsill somewhere. These will be the first seeds I've ever handled. Wish they weren't so teeny tiny _pale_0 -
I don't know if the boiling water/salt is a permanent solution ~ maybe for the smaller weeds?? I do think it's probably better getting the (whole) tap root out whenever possible, but it's easier said than done in some situations.'A watched potato will never chit'...0
