Aww, leeklets, is that really a word or just a made-up one?! :rotfl:
mbe, is an empty 20L compost bag too small to plant potatoes?? They're Charlottes.'A watched potato will never chit'...0 -

yep, keep leeks in a pot till the summer after something has finished then pop them in.
I don't think you need to separate them individually, mine are 'thinly sown' so some have a little space and others are touching, never had a problem with mine.
If I had that pot of leeks I'd probably separate them out a bit....think small groups.....into a wider pots or more smaller pots, doesn't need to be deep.
Even when it comes to planting them out, I've sometime dug a trench and dumped them in touching, they seem to push themselves away from others and I use one of the smaller ones first so you get eat and thin them out at the same time.
Hope all that makes sense.0 -

The traditional way to grow leeks is whe they are about like small spring onions you dib holes about every 4-6" and 3-4"deep and drop a single leek in each hole. Don't fill the hole with soil or you'll get gritty leeks, but fill with water. Not sure how accurate the measurements are, I haven't grown them for years.0 -
Is it really too late to sow my Leeks outside now,I live Middlesbrough way so it's poo cold and wet weather. If its too late I'll just save my seeds till next year,if it's fine I can pop them in tomorrow if the rain ever stops.
I hope not, because I've just sown some! The packet says Jan to Feb indoors (which I did, and they're coming on nicely) and March to April outside. I'm hoping by planting them towards the end of the advised period they'll crop later.I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

You can grow potatoes in a flower bucket, if you're lucky enough to have any, so yes, a 20l bag will do.
Thank you both
One potato in the compost bag??
I did'nt know you could grow potatoes in the flower buckets :j Would that be one potato per bucket as well??
I've decided that I'm going to have to drill the flower bucket holes a bit bigger before I use them. I'm a bit worried because the drill is a bit of a beast!!
It's lovely & sunny today so I'd best go & check on my seeds & seedlings
Btw, I bought a 'Garden Accessories Pack' from Home Bargains today ~ 20m twine, 20m wire & cutter, 10 plant labels & a pencil (presumably to put behind your ear) all for 39p.

Yes, one I think, and definitely only one per bucket. You can grow most things in a small container - you just have to revise your expectations. You will get a smaller crop:
That's from a flower bucket. You could probably do a little bit better, as they were quite neglected, and not a particularly great variety of potato. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I knew it would work.
Yesterday I complained that I had no spring onions.
Today I have spring onions. :rotfl:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
