Thank you KTF. I'll do that now.

Just an update. Drove the i20 but decided not to buy it and they allowed me to change it for a cheaper i10, which i liked a lot more, and at least we won't lose the deposit. Thanks for the advice and to the OP for this thread.
  • I have the same problem with the clutch on my 6 month old i20. I have done around 9000 miles ( been running around a lot lately) but this noise started at around 2000 miles and has got steadily worse. The dealer (who are being quite helpful) tells me this is a known issue with this model. The car is due at the dealers very soon and they are going to investigate the problem. Fingers crossed.

This is not the first issue though. Around the same time as the clutch started to play up the engine started to get a strange top end rattle from cold. The dealer had it in and heard the noise but are at a loss to understand what the issue is. The noise only happens now and then and clears up when the engine gets warm. At the moment the dealer ( I almost feel sorry for them) has logged the problem and asked me to monitor it.

It's a shame I did not get the dealer to look at the clutch when they were looking at the engine but I felt like I was giving them enough problems with the engine.

    Watch this space.

Hi again. I posted here on 11.12.12 and I wanted to give you all an update as to how I was getting on. Sadly my Hyundai is in the garage as we speak having a new clutch, seals clutch bearings and the engine decontaminated!! I discovered an oil leak and after taking it to my trused mechanic he told me that a seal had gone between the engine and the gear box and this is the reason that my clutch has been slipping all this time. He explained that the oil has been going onto my clutch and causing the issue. I have now lost all faith in my car, but sadly as I am now 3 weeks over the 12 month finance period with my lender, I now have to take the car to have an independent inspection to determine if the fault has been there from new. I have argued with my finance company as they own the car, surely they should back me up in getting a new car, but sadly this is not the case. If I am lucky enough to get an independent assessor to determine that the fault was there from new then I am entitled to a new car. Quite frankly I am going to lose alot of money from making the desision to buy a brand new car. I just wanted to share with you my experience and let you know so that you can look for the same, as this could be the common fault that is causing the clutch problems. The oil leak I had was very small and it was only from putting a piece of clean cardboard under my car engine bay for 3 hours after doing ten miles and then checking it that I found the problem. Maybe this might help you? I have been told though that this fault is covered under the warranty. i shall keep you posted...!

Hyundai and Kia share most of the mechanics between their cars yet no one has mentioned problems with Kia
  • I have a 2010 CRDI. At 22000 miles the clutch was making a hell of a noise, it wasn't slipping, just really noisey !.
My local dealer tested it and without quibble, replaced it free of charge.
However now the car has covered 38000 miles the noise is starting again. Unfortunately my local dealer has given up the franchise, i now have a 65 mile round trip to see if the other franchise will take the same view as the first and agree that the clutch will be replaced free of charge.. I am not hopeful as it has been replaced once already.
It's about time Hyundai admitted something is wrong with their clutches and rectified the problem. I dont need the worry every 15000 miles or so of paying out to replace the clutch!
My old Fiesta 1.8 TDI did 150000 miles before the clutch went..
10 TIMES as many miles as the Hyundai.
Someone at Hyundai has to stand up and admit there's a big problem with the clutches and sort it out.Dont blame the customers driving style ! I am an advanced driver and certainly do NOT ride the clutch !!
  • I am still angry  at the way that Hyundai have treated me.
I bought my I20 in 2011, brand new, and the clutch failed at only 2400 miles. They refused to replace it under warranty and put it down to wear-and-tear. I too was duped :( by their 5 years useless warranty. I have warned a lot of people about my sad experience with Hyundai and I hope that the bad publicity will have stopped a number of people from buying Hyundai cars.
I will never again set foot in one of their show rooms!

A lady, FloralDancer, was taking them to the small claims court. I was hoping that by now we would have heard from her.

Where are you FloralDancer? How did you get on?

Can I ask why you didn't take them to court, 2400 miles isn't wear and tear
  • The clutch replacement cost me 600 pounds. Trading Standards do not prosecute any more because of lack of funds. I did not have the heart for a long fight which, even on my 2400 miles case, I could have failed to win and would have cost me more money and a lot of time and anguish. When I complained to Hyundai they dismissed my complaint with their usual standard reply. I am sure that Hyundai have more lawyers than mechanics in their organization. Not an easy foe to fight. But, on hindsight I think that I should have done. This is why I would like to know the outcome of FloralDancer case.
The only way we can get some satisfaction is to relate our experiences with Hyundai to as many people as we can.

  • I bought the i20 comfort in 2011 after reading the Hyundai 'bumf'. Yes I thought this car will see me through my retirement ! After 12 months the car developed a high pitched squeal when moving off in 1st or reverse. Taking it back to the dealer for investigation I was informed "this is a common fault... Hyundai are aware of this problem and we are waiting for a modification." . Oh 3000 miles on the clock.
I took the car for it's 2nd year service and asked for the clutch modification and also the petrol cap to be repaired - unable to open.
After the service and further investigations, the car was booked in for the clutch and petrol cap repair and parts ordered, all under warranty. A date was given in June 2013 and a courtesy car booked. The day came, I arrived at the dealership to find no records had been made, no parts had been ordered and no courtesy car. Completely confused, I showed the appointment card with time date, work to be carried out etc..
The salesman could only apologize, the guy who booked me in was on holiday and would be back some day's later but as I explained, I watched as the information was typed into the computer and did not understand why it was not there. Neither did the salesman!
Went back some days the guy who booked me in could not understand why the information was not on the computer, he wrote some details and went to the manager. When he returned he told me the dealership was no longer with Hyundai and the work could not be carried out as they are not a Hyundai dealer ?? He did not know himself until that moment!
Went to another dealer, explained the situation and they investigated the clutch and told me I will have to pay £780 for the clutch to be renewed as it is not under warranty!!
I cannot figure out what is happening. Have contacted Hyundai who are now looking into it. I think there is definitely a problem with these clutches as too many complaints are appearing.
  • Thank you for the information on your post. Your case is very similar to mine. I needed to replace the clutch on my brand new I20 at only 2400 and Hyundai refused to do the work under warranty. I will be interested to know whether they will agree to replace the clutch on your car free of charge. Please, keep us informed. It is interesting to know that your dealer has given up the Hyundai franchise. Another contributor to this thread also reported that his dealer had given up the Hyundai franchise.
It looks as if the dealers are walking away from Hyundai. Maybe there is a message in that.
But even if your dealer has left Hyundai surely they are still responsible for the warranty in your car. They are the ones that took your money and they cannot simply walk away from their commitments. In fact the people who took the matter to the Small Claims Court made the case against the dealer and not Hyundai directly.
I hope that, in your case, this will not be necessary and that your car will be fixed under warranty.

    Good Luck.
