Just wanted to add to this. I tried speed dating last week and, although it was shattering and I had no voice the next day, I really quite enjoyed it. I echo the fact that it's good to actually speak to someone rather than just look at words and a picture. There were quite a few that I would not hae been interested in but 3 matches was great. Also it was just good to talk to men.
I was tempted by the eharmony deal so I'd be interested in how you are getting on too. Good luck!
  • Thanks mizfiesta, that would be great, can I ask what the quality of your matches was like? I ask because that's one of the criticisms I've heard about Eharmony, that they send you matches of people that are way out of your age range or that live 200 miles away lol.
mr_sharma and wannabe, did you guys go to speed dating on your own or did you go along with a friend for company and a bit of moral support? I'd feel really nervous about going on my own but none of my mates are single and even if they were I don't reckon they would be up for it anyway!

I was going to go by myself but there was a friend of a friend who went with me, but to be honest you have very little chance to talk to each other anyway. I found the hosts were really nice. Lots of people did go by themselves, especially the men. I know it's not for everyone but I enjoyed the experience.
As for the dating sites I get so fed up with people who live miles away from me getting in touch. It is really lovely of them to compliment my profile but unrealistic to meet.

I went on my own, was a good night out to be honest. Strike up a conversation with people you're speed-dating with (guys and girls), no big deal really.

A thing mysinglefriend.com did as a one-off in the summer was an informal get together (in association with Pizza Express), where singles made their own pizza. I thought that was a great idea. A lot more socially relaxed and - again - you don't have to be sat in front of your computer going off a photo and profile.

Would be good to know how people get on. Good luck!
  • I loved Speed Dating when I went, funniest night out I've ever had. Although that might have been down to the very strange men that were there though! Nothing came of it but it was a really good laugh.

I think I was probably one of the lucky ones with plenty of fish. I met my boyfriend on there, fair enough I'd been on a while before we met but he was worth the wait! I'd tried make friends online before that for about a year which was ok but decided to save the money and went for the free one. I'd been on for about 18 months on and off, I kept giving up as I was convinced I wasn't going to meet anyone, but then went to a friend's wedding who met on Match and it inspired me to give it one last chance. We started chatting on Christmas eve (the day after the wedding) on there, swapped numbers by the end of the night and met a few days later. To be honest if it wasn't for the fact that Christmas was in the way we'd have probably met up even sooner and have now been together for just over a year.

I hadn't met up with anyone that quickly before. Usually I'd have spent a few weeks chatting first and while we seemed to have built something up while chatting when we finally met there was just nothing there. I'd say if you feel comfortable meet sooner rather than later, for me if I didn't feel that I wanted to meet after a few days of exchanging a lot of emails I didn't think I ever would.

Yes I got the normal messages asking for "fun" straight away, and the lovely guy who sent me a picture of his... well lets just say I think he was pretty happy! I also got a few abusive messages when telling someone that thanks for the kind offer but no, I didn't want to meet them for sex, but I just moved on from them and concentrated on the genuine ones and it eventually all paid off!

Oh Rachel you made me laugh when I read that! Fab lol x

  • As well as speed dating events I've also seen these 'lock and key parties' advertised in my area. For those that, like me, have never heard of them they involve all the girls being given a small lock and the guys are all given a key. The idea is that you all go round trying to match up the keys with the correct lock.
This sounded like fun but then I realised the potential for double entendres was enormous. 'Mind if I slip my key into your lock....' and all that sort of stuff. Could end up being very cheesy......:rotfl:

Actually went to one of these last night. Met a couple of interesting ladies, but the whole thing felt a bit like a meat-market ! Many of the women were only there for a laugh. Much prefer the speeddating format, which is a bit more serious.

Have tried the free dating sites and i can honestly say they are a complete waste of time for us blokes, pof included! Am now thinking of joining Match.com coz, at the end of the day, i reckon the paid sites are all pretty much the same and at least with Match you get 45£ cashback thru TCB.
